Japanese indie developer AIDE AUDIO has released VS-1 Versa Synth, a free hybrid synthesizer for Windows with an optional AI-driven patch generator. I’m still divided on AI in music production, and I recently wrote about the topic in the context of AI-assisted plugin development. I’m not a fan of AI being used to crank out low-quality plugins, but I do think there’s potential when skilled DSP engineers and musicians use it as a tool to build useful instruments. VS-1 is in a league of its own. The synth engine itself is freeware, and the AI is an optional extra subscription.…
The Sound of Massive Analog Width “Some synthesizers sound precise. Others sound alive.” The Oberheim OB-X didn’t sound polite. It sounded enormous. Warm. Wide. Unstable in the best possible way. When people think of: giant analog brass huge synth pads cinematic 80s textures They’re often hearing the influence of the OB-X. Quick Summary 👉 The Oberheim OB-X is a classic analog polyphonic synthesizer released in 1979, known for its huge detuned sound, rich filters, and iconic use in rock, pop, film scores, and electronic music. The OB-X was created by Tom Oberheim and released in 1979. At the…
Filtronix is the first release from Takahiro Oishi (Push and Groove), a producer and developer based in Japan. This debut plugin offers four carefully modelled analogue synthesiser filter circuits. The four filter models aren’t from any old synths; they come from the Minimoog Model D, Oberheim SEM, Sequential Prophet 5, and EDP Wasp. Aptly named M-Filter, S-Filter, P-Filter, and W-Filter on the Filtronix GUI. Right now, Filtronix is available as a VST3 plugin for Windows, but pending community feedback, a Mac version could be in the pipeline. Filtronix is currently a low-pass filter, but multi-mode support will come in future…

GARUC Audio has released Prism Sat, a free analog-style saturation plugin for macOS and Windows. The prism on the interface immediately reminded me of Pink Floyd, though I’m not sure if it’s an intentional reference. Either way, it gets bonus points from me, even though I’m more of a The Wall fan than a Dark Side of the Moon fan. Prism Sat is built on the same DSP architecture as GARUC’s paid Tape Hyll plugin, and the developer describes it as carrying the DNA of the early first-generation digital tape emulations. Those early plugins were the first to translate the…
Overload Audio has made MOODYSIX free, a six-voice analog-style synth modeled on the 1981 Korg Polysix. MOODYSIX was originally a $6 release (a dollar per voice, as developer Andy Morrison put it), but he just informed me that the price has been dropped to free on Gumroad. It’s a pay-what-you-want listing, so enter $0 at checkout if you want it for nothing. If you like the free plugin, please consider supporting the developer’s work with a donation. Indie developers need all the support we can provide. This is the same developer behind the EchoDude BBD150 we covered a while back,…
Excite Audio and Plugin Boutique are giving away Bloom Mura Masa Lite ($29 value) for free with the coupon code NEXTLEVELFREE at checkout on Plugin Boutique. Before anything else, the usual heads-up. This is clearly a limited-time offer, but I don’t know the exact end date, and these codes can stop working without warning. If you want it, grab it now rather than later. Bloom Mura Masa is a sampler/sequencer instrument made in collaboration with UK producer Mura Masa, built around sounds from his 2024 album Curve 1 and his Curve Club nights. You get gritty bass hits, warped percussion,…
Different Creators, Different Workflows “There is no perfect studio. Only the studio that helps you finish music.” Not every music producer works the same way. Some start with drums. Some start with chords. Some start with lyrics. Some start with sound design. That’s why your: should match how you naturally create. Quick Summary 👉 Beatmakers, electronic musicians, musicians, and singer songwriters all approach music production differently. Choosing the right DAW, studio setup, and workflow depends on how you write and hear music. Producer Types: From a Music Fan to a Music Producer ☯️ How They Create Beatmakers often…
Indie developer cloph-dsp has released Freeze95, a free zero-latency stutter and freeze effect with a Windows 95-era CRT interface. Freeze95 is a three-band glitch engine designed to add motion to static audio. The signal is split with a phase-coherent LR4 crossover, and each band is then independently glitched using randomized capture, reverse, slow-mo, and granular algorithms. The aesthetic and the name both come from 90s personal computer nostalgia. Developer Pedro Castro told me he built the plugin around memories of his childhood computer freezing mid-song, with the stuck audio buffer producing that harsh rapid-fire stutter. If you’ve ever used an…
inMusic to acquire Native Instruments: industry powerhouses reach a definitive agreement. For some, Native Instruments’ journey from industry frontrunners to preliminary insolvency felt as inexplicable as an M. Night Shyamalan plot twist. For others, in hindsight, the apparent downfall of Native Instruments came as no real surprise, much like an M. Night Shyamalan plot twist. Either way, the insolvency story certainly shook things up and left millions of music makers with many reasonable concerns and questions. Although speculative, the general consensus that rapid expansion and an apparent shift in priorities that placed market leadership above customer satisfaction led to NI’s…
