Developer Mannix Squared has released a free plugin bundle consisting of eight refreshed and rebuilt plugins. It’s been a couple of years, or thereabouts, since I first covered Mannix Squared on BPB, and that was the free Mix Space plugin. Super Saturator followed shortly after Mix Space, and a couple of plugins soon became a collection of easy-to-use mix tools designed to enhance and speed up your daily workflow. The bundle includes eight plugins that tackle everyday mixing tasks, such as tightening the low end, controlling peaks, and shaping saturation. Here are the included plugins: AB Reference Tight Low End…
From developer Deadloop comes MoonVerb, a free shimmer reverb plugin for macOS and Windows. Reverb is an effect that we couldn’t live without because it plays so many roles in our music production and mixing. It’s anything from taking the edge off vocals so they feel like part of a mix to otherworldly sound design, and everything in between. But, despite its importance, it’s sometimes a hard sell because one common response to a new reverb plugin is to ask, “Do I really need another reverb plugin?” The answer is undeniably yes or no. Most of us probably have more…
Reffrey is a free reference track plugin available in VST3 and AU formats for Mac and Windows, with no account required to download. Plugins like this one are useful when you want to quickly compare your track to your favorite mixes, and referencing is one of the most important parts of mixing, in my opinion. Reffrey makes the whole process super easy, and the fact that it’s free is a nice bonus. I’m not sure if this one is vibe-coded. It could be, since the product page doesn’t mention how it was built, and it’s hard to tell from the…
deFORM is a brand-new free cinematic synth from ebbandflow, and it’s available for macOS (Monterey to Tahoe) and Windows (10-11). While discussing cinematic sounds, I should mention Venus Theory’s recent forms:tongue, too. If you haven’t tried it yet, go check it out. After adding deFORM to your basket, you’ll be asked to provide an email and residential address to complete the free transaction. Once complete, you’ll have immediate access to download links via the website or your email. High-speed internet access and 6GB of drive space are listed as requirements for the download because there’s a fair amount of content.…
Shaping What You Hear “Sound is the invisible half of the experience.” Every sound you hear in a movie… Every effect in a video game… Every synth in a track… Was designed. Not just recorded. Sound design is the art of creating and shaping sound to serve a story, a world, or a song. Quick Summary 👉 Sound design is the process of creating, manipulating, and shaping audio for media, games, or music. It typically falls into three categories: film/TV, video games, and electronic music production. How does Sound Work? Energy, Frequency & Vibration This is…
Native Instruments has released Komplete 26, the latest version of its flagship production collection. The bundle brings together over 190 instruments and effects with more than 180,000 sounds, including professional mixing tools from iZotope and Brainworx. It’s available in four paid tiers, ranging from $99 for Select up to $1,949 for Collector’s Edition. Several new instruments arrive with this update. Absynth 6 joins the collection for the first time. The semi-modular synthesizer is known for its evolving tones and is an excellent addition to the synthesis lineup. Noire and Claire are two new sample libraries built from rare grand pianos,…
I’ll say the thing most plugin lists won’t. If you’re new to music production, you don’t need 50 free plugins. You need about five. The rest is already sitting inside your DAW, and learning stock plugins first will do more for your music than having a folder chock-full of free plugins ever will. I’ve been covering new free plugin releases for years (we cover them on BPB pretty much every day), but I’ve noticed a pattern in the emails I receive from readers. Many of them have downloaded dozens of plugins, but can’t find the one they actually want when…
Developer DAWJunkie has released Knobs, a free random-effects processor for macOS and Windows. We’ve been featuring DAWJunkie regularly for a little while now, and over that time, there are a few things we’ve come to expect from every release. The first thing we’ve come to expect is seriously usable sounds wrapped up in a playful interface, often with a quirky name. Another thing we’ve come to expect is user-friendly freebies that overdeliver, and part of that comes from the quirky character of some titles. But the main thing we’ve come to expect from DAWJunkie is something different. For example, if…
Dezert Audio has released PolyFreq, a free analog modeled synthesizer plugin for macOS and Windows. You may recognize Dezert Audio from Freq-2, the premium Kontakt instrument we covered previously, built from recordings taken from Dez Wright’s personal collection of over 20 analog synths. PolyFreq is a different kind of release. It’s a synthesis engine rather than a sample library, but the focus on vintage analog character is just as present. I loved the interface design straight away, particularly the filter section. The cutoff frequency and resonance controls appear as horizontal bars that you adjust by dragging, rather than the standard…
Developer Rob Kor has released ChugMate, a free zero-latency VST3 doubler aimed squarely at tight, heavy rhythm guitars. Broadly speaking, generic doubler plugins tend to get the job done on clean tones but fall apart on palm-muted rhythm tracks. You usually end up with smeared transients, and the result pretty much collapses into a washed-out phasey mess when someone listens in mono. The developer noticed this issue and made ChugMate try to solve it. And this is the second stere-related plugin we’re featuring today, along with PanBlur. What I liked here is the focus on mono compatibility. A lot of…
