A few weeks ago, I wrote about the only five free plugins a beginner actually needs, and the argument was simple. Stock plugins in modern DAWs are good enough for almost everything, so don’t drown yourself in 50 free downloads on day one. This is the follow-up to that piece. At some point, you do outgrow the stock stuff. Maybe you want more sounds, a transient shaper your DAW doesn’t have, or just some quick inspiration instead of reading BPB news articles. Here’s the thing, though. The temptation when you reach that point is to download dozens of plugins from…
Same DAW, Different Depths “The tool stays the same. The possibilities expand.” All three versions of Ableton Live share the same core workflow. You still get: Session View Arrangement View warping MIDI sequencing audio recording But each version unlocks a different level of creative freedom. Quick Summary 👉 Ableton Live Intro is ideal for beginners, Standard is great for intermediate producers, and Suite is the complete version designed for serious electronic musicians, beatmakers, and songwriters. Before comparing versions, it helps to understand why producers love Ableton. Ableton changed music production with: Session View A non-linear way to…
Ollie Nicklin has released Void Wave, a free dual-oscillator wavetable synthesizer for macOS and Windows. Void Wave is the first plugin from Ollie Nicklin, a solo developer who learned JUCE and built the synth because he couldn’t find one that nailed the sounds he actually wanted to play. His feature shortlist was pretty specific. The synth needed big, detuned basses, proper acid movement, and solid pads. So instead of shopping for another general-purpose everything-synth like Vital, he built Void Wave to excel at those types of sounds. The plugin is currently in beta (v0.9) and comes free with no account,…

Crickets Audio has released Strata, a multi-track frequency spectrum monitoring plugin that displays the spectrum of every track in your project layered into a single graph. Most spectrum analyzers show you one track at a time. Strata flips that and shows everything together, with each track stacked on top of the others. The main idea here is to make masking, arrangement conflicts, and overall spectral balance easier to see at a glance. It’s a different way of looking at a mix, and it can highlight problems that are easy to miss when you’re switching between per-track analyzers. Strata comes as…
Hyperfocus DSP has released Niner, a free open-source kick drum synth with a parallel 909-style clap voice for Linux, macOS, and Windows. It’s been a while since I last covered a free drum synth specifically focused on kicks. I recently wrote about Sender Spike’s DR.89, which goes for the full 909 kit experience. Niner is a different beast because it specifically emulates the 909 kick drum and adds a lot of extra stuff on top, including its own clap voice, a flexible distortion palette, and a bounce-to-disk function. So even if you’re already covered on the 909 front, this one…
How to choose the right software for your music studio. Have you ever wondered whether you need hardware with onboard DSP or whether you should run plug-ins natively from your computer? The difference between native and DSP plug-ins isn’t just technical — it shapes how you track, mix, and collaborate. Here’s our breakdown of how these plug-in formats work and which is right for your setup. Universal Audio’s Matt Petersen breaks down the differences between UAD Native and Apollo DSP plug-ins. What’s the difference between native and DSP plug-ins? UAD Native Plug-Ins Best for: Mixing in the Box, Remote…

You can now get 30% off the u-he Repro at Plugin Boutique for a limited time. Repro (includes Repro 1 and Repro 5) combines the sound of two legendary synths by Sequential: the Pro-One and the Prophet 5. Plugin Boutique’s 30% discount means you can buy Repro for $104 (usually $149) until the offer ends on May 17, 2026. I know it’s not easy to drop $100 on a virtual instrument, especially when we have so many excellent free sounds these days. We can even get some of those excellent free sounds directly from u-he with Zebralette 3. But, if…
Unusable Engineering has released Cavitation Fractures, a free distortion plugin for macOS inspired by fluid dynamics. I love distortions in general, and I especially enjoy trying new ones that don’t follow the standard overdrive/clipping playbook. Cavitation Fractures is one of those. It’s different but not weird in a way that you don’t know how to use it when you load it for the first time. It’s pretty intuitive when you start twisting the knobs and listening to the results. I’ve been using it for distorting basses in particular over the past couple of days, and I think it’s exceptional for…
