Eugene Yakshin of Hvoya Audio has released Gneiss, a free morphing multistage filter effect plugin for macOS and Windows. As I mentioned before, I am taking a look at some of my favorite KVR Developer Challenge entries this year, and Gneiss is another one I really liked. It is free to download as part of KVR Developer Challenge 2026. Gneiss is a filter, but not the boring kind we’ve all seen a gazillion times. It uses two resonant pre-filters feeding a Moog-style transistor ladder, then adds drive, damping, morphing, and a chaos engine that can push the whole thing into…
Purafied Audio has made Liquid Death Snare free again, dropping the price from $38 to $0 for a limited time. I just received an email from Purafied Audio about the offer, and this is definitely a nice one to catch if you work with acoustic drums. If you have a weak acoustic snare track that needs replacing or reinforcing, Liquid Death Snare is fantastic for that job. We covered Liquid Death Snare on BPB when it was previously free, and it is good to see the plugin return as a free download. There is no expiry date listed on the…
Dystopian Waves has made DroX II Pro, its glitch and stutter audio effect, free for a limited time on Gumroad. The Pro version is currently listed as $0+ and 100% off, down from its regular $35 price. I do not see an expiry date on the Gumroad page, so it is probably best to grab it sooner rather than later if you are interested in plugins capable of some serious glitchy stuff. We covered the basic Drox II plugin back in November 2025 when Dystopian Waves released it as a free plugin. Before that, Drox II was available as a…
SoundMorph is retiring the original standalone TimeFlux software, which is now available for $9 until July 31, down from its regular $149 price. I just received an email from SoundMorph about the retirement deal, and it’s both great news and sad news. After July 31, the original standalone TimeFlux will be removed from the SoundMorph store permanently, but on the bright side, it’s available for only $9 before it retires. Also, TimeFlux is standalone software, not a VST or AU plugin, so it’s not something you can open in your DAW. But even if you do not need the software…
Sound Leaves Clues “Everything in life is vibration.”— Albert Einstein Sound feels invisible. You hear a kick drum. You feel a bass note. You notice the walls shake. But you can’t see the wave moving through the room. Water gives us a clue. Drop a stone into a still pond… And circles move outward from the point of impact. The water rises. Falls. Collides. Reflects. Combines. Sound behaves in many of the same ways. Not because sound is water. But because both can move as waves. Once you understand water ripples… Subwoofers become easier to understand. So do phase. Room…
Words like clipping and saturation get thrown around often in music production circles. But what do they really mean? Analog equipment like guitar amps and preamps can clip and distort, but so do digital mixers and rack gear. Distortion is one of the most powerful and least understood tools in recording. And it can be hard to understand the nuance. So we put together a guide covering everything you need to know. When distortion occurs, a waveform is deformed to create flattened peaks. What Is Distortion? Distortion happens when an audio signal is pushed beyond what a system…
Gliff is a free guitar-based plugin for macOS and Windows that’s aimed at guitarists and keyboardists alike. So, there are two ways to approach this plugin: one is as a guitarist looking to create clean, polyphonic MIDI chord patterns that you can drag and drop into your project. The appeal might be that you’re a guitar hero, but you need a nice progression for a keys/synth track, and Gliff allows you to create it using the instrument you’re comfortable with. When you’re reading about Gliff, you might come across phrases like “turns guitar into MIDI” or “guitar in, MIDI out”,…
Matari Audio has released BUFFR, a free public beta of a retrospective audio, system audio, and MIDI capture plugin for macOS, Windows, and Linux. Important note before we get into the details: the public beta is free, but each beta license lasts 21 days from first use. There is no announced beta program end date, but I do not have pricing info yet or confirmation on whether beta access will be prolonged. I will update the article when Matari Audio shares more details about the final pricing and beta timeline. I liked BUFFR enough to post about it now despite…
Expressive E has released Noisy 2.6, a major update to its noise-through-resonance software synthesizer. Noisy 2.6 is a free update for existing Noisy 2 owners. For a limited time, new users can get it for €89/$89 (40% off), before it returns to its regular €149/$149 price. I remember playing one of Expressive E’s early keyboards at Musikmesse many years ago, and the nuance you could get with it was amazing, even in those early days. Their products have grown a lot since then, and Noisy is one that brings it all into the plugin realm. The synth is built around…
Friendgineer Labs has released Chance, a free random multi-FX plugin for macOS and Windows. Chance is another 2026 KVR Developer Challenge entry I liked this year. I will take a closer look at a few more KVRDC plugins separately, but this is one of my favorites because I simply love plugins that can give you random results. That is something I enjoy a lot during sound design work. Sometimes you just feel stuck and need something to push you forward, and plugins where effects can get unpredictable are exactly what I need in my workflow from time to time. So…
