SoundRave is offering ThermVoltGe, a germanium overdrive plugin for macOS and Windows, as a free download for a limited time. ThermVoltGe normally costs $19.99, but you can get it for free with the launch discount code “OGRQVP1USL”. I like using guitar-oriented plugins like this one on synths. Many lead synth patches I make have at least a bit of guitar distortion added on top for extra bite, and ThermVoltGe is a good option for that kind of job. The plugin is designed to recreate the compressed sound of germanium overdrive pedals. It models OA91-style germanium diode clipping, battery sag, temperature…

Developer Morphoice has released the beta version of EightySix, a free Juno-6 emulation for macOS and Windows. EightySix is free right now, but this beta version may stop working when a final release is introduced. The final release may be paid only. Morphoice is a producer, composer, and developer based in Germany. As a musician and producer, Morphoice is heavily inspired by the work of composers like Vangelis, who shaped the sound of the 80s through iconic movies like Blade Runner and Chariots of Fire. Morphoice carries these influences into plugin development, too, with emulations of vintage synths that characterise…

On a more technical level, I also intentionally kept certain musical elements consistent. For example, the first two tracks are in the same key (D minor), are only five BPM apart, feature female old-school rave-influenced vocals, and share the same structure: intro, verse, buildup, drop, buildup, drop, outro. In the second half of the EP, both tracks feature male vocals and are designed to transition directly into each other when listened to in sequence. By keeping these  structural, tonal, and conceptual elements aligned, I was able to let the sound palettes contrast  while still grounding the EP as one cohesive body…

The Same Family, Two Different Destinations “Every professional studio starts somewhere.” Before many producers used Logic Pro… They used GarageBand. That’s not an accident. GarageBand was designed to introduce people to music production. Logic Pro was designed to take them further. Both come from Apple. Both share a similar DNA. But they are built for very different stages of the journey.   Quick Summary 👉 GarageBand is a free beginner-friendly DAW for simple recording and songwriting, while Logic Pro is a professional music production system with advanced instruments, mixing, editing, and sound design capabilities. Logic Pro vs Ableton Live For…

Is it me, or do people who work in pro audio seem more sensitive? A earphone cable that feels “fine” during a short listening session can become distracting during a long edit – a rehearsal, a podcast, or a monitoring session: as it begins to rub against clothing, pull around the ear, or create handling noise every time you move. While some people are quick to blame the earphones, very often the IEMs (in-ear monitoring) cables are the actual component, taking most of the daily stress: movement, storage, tension, repeated handling, and constant use around a desk, studio, or rehearsal space.…

Krystal Dynamics has released KrystalPeak, a free limiter plugin for macOS and Windows. We covered Krystal Dynamics earlier this year when the developer launched with three free plugins: KrystalField, KrystalClip, and KrystalComp. My first impressions of those releases were very positive, and KrystalPeak makes an even better first impression for me. The thing I like most here is the interface. KrystalPeak looks clean, but more importantly, it’s visually helpful in a way that reminds me of Waveform Compressor by Woodstock Audio. You get a real-time waveform display that shows what is happening to the peaks, alongside input, output, gain reduction,…

Orra Audio has released Orra Press ($49), a multi-module serial compressor plugin for macOS and Windows. We are taking a closer look at the plugin and giving away two free licenses, kindly provided for BPB readers by Orra Audio. We recently covered Orra Tone Zone, the developer’s free tonal curve corrector, and Orra Press moves into a different part of the mixing chain. It is a commercial dynamics plugin with six reorderable slots and six compressor engines. Each slot in Orra Press can host one of six engines: Classic VCA, Optical, FET, Multiband, Spectral, or Limiter. You can use them…

The Perfect Vocal Usually Doesn’t Exist “Great performances are often assembled, not discovered.” A singer might record: 5 takes 10 takes 30 takes Not because they’re bad. Because every take contains something valuable. One version has better emotion. Another has better pitch. Another has a magical phrase delivery. Vocal comping is the art of combining those moments into one final performance.   Quick Summary 👉 Vocal comping (short for compositing) is the process of editing together the best parts of multiple vocal takes into one final performance using the strongest lines, words, syllables, tone, pitch, and emotion.   Think…

VST Alarm is offering the W.A. Production Orchid chorus plugin as a free download until June 4th, 2026. Orchid normally costs $39.90, so this is a good time to grab it if you want another chorus effect in your plugin folder for free. Instead of simply doubling the signal, Orchid creates four chorus layers and lets you shape the result with the usual Speed and Depth controls, plus Feedback and Spread. I don’t use choruses too often apart from the basic JUNO-style stuff on synths, but this one is fun. You can use it for subtle thickening on synths, guitars,…
