Getting the signature Afro Tech aesthetic right is the hard part. The genre lives on its percussion, but that is only half the story. The other half is a handful of melodic and bass sounds that give these tracks their soul, and that is what we are building today. This breakdown covers five sounds pulled from the biggest records in the genre, inspired by the Magnifik label sound, Juno, HotLap and more: the energetic bass lead, the groovy bassline, the Afro House pluck, the chord stabs, and the atmosphere. Here is what makes each one tick and how to dial…
Faster Is Not the Same as Better “The future is already here—it’s just not evenly distributed.” — William Gibson Music production has always changed alongside technology. Tape made recording possible. MIDI made instruments editable. Digital audio made unlimited revisions possible. Now AI is changing the speed of production. It can remove noise from a vocal. Separate a finished song into stems. Identify notes inside an audio recording. Suggest an EQ curve. Build a starting point for a master. Tasks that once took hours can sometimes happen in seconds. But speed is not the final goal. The goal is to spend…
Dusk Audio has released TapeMachine 2, a free tape emulation plugin for macOS, Windows, and Linux. We featured Dusk Audio’s original Tape Machine plugin earlier this year, when it arrived alongside 4K EQ and MultiComp. TapeMachine 2 is a new version with a redesigned interface and a new tape engine. The main point is that TapeMachine 2 is still free, but it now gives you more choices than the original version. I like that you can customize the tape behavior quite a lot. You can choose between two tape machines, four tape speeds, four tape formulations, multiple signal paths, NAB…
Boomer Hotel has released NULLIFY, a codec audition and null-test plugin that is free with a coupon code until August 31st, 2026. NULLIFY normally costs $19, but you can get it for free at checkout with the coupon code BHPLUGINS2026. The checkout runs through Lemon Squeezy, and your email address is required at checkout, but there is no account system or iLok. The plugin comes from Z, a producer and mixing engineer based in New York. It is the first plugin from Boomer Hotel, and they also have a musical EQ called KEYCOMB planned next. NULLIFY is designed to show…
It’s always cool to see a free and open-source tool that offers a more comprehensive feature set than some paid alternatives, and that seems to be what we have with AudioAuditor. The desktop and Command Line Interface app offers an all-in-one toolkit for analyzing and listening to music. What is AudioAuditor? AudioAuditor is a free, open-source app that combines the expected features of a music playback platform/app and an audio analysis engine, with some interesting extras. The app is aimed at music producers and music lovers alike. At the moment, the desktop app is only available for Windows 10 or…
Jeesonic has updated EQ Pro, its free 24-band dynamic equalizer plugin for macOS and Windows, to version 1.2.2. I rarely cover free plugin updates in the news section because we get free updates every day. But I felt like sharing this one because EQ Pro is definitely one of the best free EQ plugins right now. It only appeared recently, but the developer is clearly working on it, and version 1.2 makes the plugin feel a lot more polished. The interface now looks a lot slicker, and together with the new features, EQ Pro gets even closer to rivaling professional…
Tweakbench has released Jigsaw, a free pedal board effect plugin for macOS, Windows, Linux, and iOS. This one is not groundbreaking, but it is still a reason to celebrate for me. Tweakbench is an old-school indie developer, and seeing that name in the news takes me back to the old days, when there were only a handful of freeware VST developers making weird and memorable free plugins. Earlier this year, Tweakbench returned to plugin development after a long break, rebuilding its old plugins for modern systems and reintroducing many of them with a small price tag. Quite a few of…
Full Bucket Music will soon release FB3, a free software emulation of the Kawai K3 hybrid synthesizer from 1986. I first saw the news on Synth Anatomy, run by my good friend Tom, and the first proper look comes from Espen Kraft’s video based on a beta version of the plugin. FB3 is not publicly available yet, so this is a coming-soon article rather than a download post. Still, as a massive, massive fan of Full Bucket Music synths, I had to mention it. BPB readers may have noticed that already, especially since I included Full Bucket Music’s Fury-800 as…
iZotope Japan is giving away VEA, the Voice Enhancement Assistant plugin, for free until July 31st at 23:59 Japan time. The giveaway is part of the Japan-limited iZotope Mix & Master Sale 2026, which celebrates iZotope joining Boris FX. The broader sale runs until August 16th, but the free VEA offer ends much earlier, so keep that in mind. VEA normally sells for $29, and the Japanese campaign page lists it as a free new purchase during the promo period. The form asks for your email address, the main way you plan to use the plugin, and an optional answer…
Jan Schulten has released RealCassette, a free cassette tape effect plugin and standalone app for Windows. Most BPB readers already know that I absolutely love processing sounds with cassette tapes. That probably became obvious somewhere between BPB Cassette 808, BPB Cassette 909, and the newer BPB Cassette Drums plugin. So yes, RealCassette is my kind of vibe. I also love the lo-fi computer nostalgia thing going on with the interface, and that the developer’s site feels like a nod to Windows 98. When I see that, it immediately brings back memories of my early days of making music on a…
