Flame Sound is offering Analogue Drums, a $39 collection of analog drum machine samples, as a free download for BPB readers until Sunday, August 2nd (23:59 CEST).
Yesterday, I released VATRA, the first Flame Sound plugin, and it’s been a huge deal for me after almost two years of development.
To celebrate VATRA finally being live, I wanted to thank everyone on BPB with an exclusive freebie from Flame Sound. Analogue Drums is the perfect choice because, of course, we all love punchy drum sounds, but it also has some pretty cool processed hits you won’t find in other drum libraries.
The library is based on the MFB-522 drum machine, but I made sure it goes far beyond clean drum hits. I sampled the sounds through a wide range of analog and interesting gear I had at the time, including various tube preamps, a Tascam 244 Portastudio, a Saba CD 262 cassette deck, and, my favorite, the Dynacord Echocord Mini tape delay.
The MFB-522 is one of my favorite drum machines. It sounds similar to the 808, but I prefer the 522’s kick (I included some super long ones in this pack), and it can get super snappy. Also, it sounds awesome when you add some grit, which is exactly what I did for this one.
That means you get everything from clean analog drum sounds to tube, cassette, and 4-track processed versions, plus some seriously distorted and heavily processed hits.
The Echocord sounds are especially fun for me because they were captured by running the drum machine through the tape echo and twisting the controls to create movement, transitions, and various special effects.
So even if you are not specifically looking for analog drum machine samples, there is plenty here for layering, fills, transition effects, and weird little noises that can make a track feel more alive. The processed and tape echo folders are probably where I would start if you want the more characterful stuff.
I also went crazy with round-robins for this one. It took ages to sample, but you can really hear it was worth the effort when sequencing these drums.
Analogue Drums includes 1,135 individual samples from the MFB-522, with up to ten round-robin variations per hit. The sounds are organized into six kits: Clean, Tube, Cassette, 4-track, Echocord, and Processed.
The pack also includes ready-made kit presets for Kontakt 5, FXpansion Geist, and OSC Poise, with round robins already programmed. You get 35 Geist kits, 35 Poise kits, and eight Kontakt 5 kits.
All samples are provided as 24-bit WAV files at 44.1 kHz, so you can also use them in any DAW or sampler that supports WAV. The library takes up 233 MB on disk, and the ZIP download is around 190 MB.
And if you want to hear what VATRA does to these drums, there’s a free 7-day trial of the full plugin (no signup required).
Analogue Drums is free for BPB readers until Sunday, August 2nd, after which it returns to its regular $39 price.
