I have tried many Minimoog plugins over the years, including free and paid ones, but I still return to this one for bass. It just sounds really good to my ears.
The interface matters to me, too, not just as eye candy but in terms of usability, and this one both looks incredibly nice inside the DAW and feels very intuitive. More importantly, it sounds simply amazing, which is why I keep coming back to it even though I own several Minimoog-style instruments.
Universal Audio developed the plugin in partnership with Moog Music. According to the product page, UA’s team modeled three vintage Minimoog units before choosing a single “Golden Unit” as the reference, using circuit modeling and custom robotic knob measurements to capture the behavior of the original hardware.
The result is a software Minimoog with the expected thick oscillators, ladder filter growl, self-oscillation, and feedback trick where the output is looped back into the input for extra drive. UA also modeled some of the pitch-tracking quirks that are part of the original instrument’s behavior.
It is not just a strict front-panel recreation, either. Universal Audio added a few practical extras, including switchable note priority, legato behavior, sample and hold, and an extra LFO. That stuff really helps expand the sound palette, but without turning it into a completely different synth.
The included version is UAD Native, so it runs on Mac or PC without Universal Audio hardware. You will need a free iLok account, and activation works through iLok Cloud or a second-generation-or-newer iLok USB dongle.
Moog Minimoog runs on macOS 11 Big Sur or newer and Windows 10/11 64-bit systems. It supports AAX in Pro Tools, Audio Units in Logic Pro, VST3/AU in Ableton Live, VST3 in Cubase and Studio One, and LUNA, but Universal Audio notes that UAD plugins do not work in GarageBand.
