How to make an Afro Tech track: HotLap production breakdown (Savanna Vol. 1)

Want to know how to make Afro Tech? The fastest way to learn is to reverse-engineer a track that works. This breakdown pulls apart a HotLap-style record that hit Beatport #1, blending Afro Tech, Melodic Techno, and House into five parts: the drums, the bassline, the stabs, the ambience, and the arrangement.

    The Drums: Layer the Groove

The groove lives in the drums, and it comes from many simple parts locking together, not one busy loop. The velocity movement is what makes it breathe instead of sounding programmed.

    Key settings:

    • Punchy kick as the foundation, owning the low end
    • An off-beat kick shot for bounce (the first Afro House move)
    • Syncopated toms and a bongo for an organic, rolling feel
    • A 16th layer of percussion, clave and shaker for speed and detail
    • Velocity changes on the clave so it breathes
    • Off-beat cymbals on 16ths to keep the push

    The Bassline: Three Layers

A flat bass will not carry this style. It is three layers, each with one job: groove, glide, and width.

    Key settings:

    • Groove and sub: a subby bass playing the core riff
    • Glide: a sub drop with a glide on the first note of each phrase for movement
    • Width: a reese from detuned oscillators

Layered Afro Tech bassline in Ableton: bassline, sub drop and reese with EQ

    The Main Synth: Stacked Stabs

The signature sound, and where the genre blend actually happens. The stacked plucky stabs are the Melodic Techno half; the one-note plucks running through them are the Afro House half.

    Key settings:

    • Three keys stacked: deep, brighter with reverb, and distorted
    • One-note plucks running through for rhythm and energy (an Afro House move)
    • An octave layer in the drop for power

Stacked stab MIDI in Ableton: the layered key, piano and character tracks

The Ambience: Space and Ear Candy

The part that fills the space and makes the track feel full without stealing focus. Simple, slow movement plus sparse ear candy does the work.

    Key settings:

    • Atmo 1: a saw wave with a slow pitch LFO moving behind everything
    • Ear-candy shots (Atmos 2 to 4), used sparingly so they stay surprising
    • A deep piano note every 16 bars for a cinematic impact

Ableton ambience group with a saw atmosphere, ear-candy shots and a deep piano impact

    The Arrangement: Tease, Build, Drop

For DJs, the arrangement has to be practical as well as exciting. The shape is tease, build, drop, break, then a bigger drop.

    Key settings:

    • A DJ-friendly intro that teases the theme early
    • A mini build, then focus on drums, bass and ear candy
    • A break that brings the theme back, drops it, and runs into the next breakdown
    • A final FX-driven build
    • The main drop: extra drum layers and octave synths for the biggest moment
    • An outro for easy DJ mixing
