Trebless has released Tesseract Echo, a free multi-tap magnetic tape delay and FDN reverb for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
I still miss the old arcDev ET-301 delay plugin, which is sadly discontinued. But because of that, I still test every new delay plugin that pops up, hoping I will find something with a similar sound.
Tesseract Echo is a different beast, but not a bad one if you like playing around with multi-tap delays. It is deep and super tweakable.
Definitely worth a look if you enjoy building more complex delay spaces with modulation and stuff.
The plugin has a four-head tape engine, with independent level and pan controls per head. It also uses fractional-spacing algorithms, so the taps do not have to sit on a regular grid.
You’re also getting some analog-ish color with this one. The tape side includes a non-linear filter section with one-pole high-pass and low-pass filters, plus an analog-style Drive stage inside the feedback loop.
Automatic makeup gain is included, and it really helps keep the level more manageable when pushing the delay character harder.
The added reverb and sidechain compression are fun. Tesseract Echo includes a Feedback Delay Network reverb with selectable routing, plus a built-in ducker that can push the wet signal down against the dry input.
That is pretty useful for ambient work, if you want big delay/reverb clouds without completely swallowing the source.
The modulation section is also pretty good. You can push it into audio-rate modulation or use the Tape (wow and flutter) and Stepped Random LFO shapes for mechanical instability and more broken-sounding movement.
There is also a Karplus-Strong engine that tunes delay time to incoming MIDI notes, opening the door to physical string-like tones and resonant tuned effects.
The only thing I am not in love with is the GUI. There are too many colors for my taste, and after spending around 30 minutes with it yesterday, it still took me a while to find the control I needed.
With an improved GUI and a cleaner control layout, though, I think Tesseract Echo could become popular. There is a lot of creative power here, especially for producers who enjoy experimental delays, tape-style modulation, and huge spatial effects.
