TerminalVST has released Instant, a free percussion plugin for macOS and Windows.
Instant is basically a minimal step sequencer for drums. It lets you pick a category, such as clap, snare, closed hi-hat, or open hi-hat, browse the included samples or load your own, and you have a rhythmic part running without building the pattern from scratch.
I like the minimal interface design, and I always enjoy experimenting with drum patterns. If you have a bunch of drum samples on your computer and are bored with the usual drum groove or sampler workflow, Instant could be a fun way to create percussive loops in a slightly different way.
The developer deliberately left the kick out. The idea is to keep Instant focused on the percussion parts producers often rush through, rather than trying to replace a full drum machine or dedicated kick plugin.
The main workflow is very fast. You choose a sound and use the running pattern as a starting point. But if you want to go deeper, there is a 32-step sequencer with variable pattern length, per-step velocity, shuffle, swing, micro-timing, a fill toggle, pattern reset, and velocity randomization.
The more interesting part is the parameter lock system. Each step can store its own pitch, high-pass filter, low-pass filter, envelope shape, shuffle, reverse, and micro-timing values. The plugin visually reflects locked values during playback, and you can record automation by turning knobs while the pattern runs.
Instant also makes it easy to work with your own sounds. Drop WAV or AIFF files into the relevant folders for each instrument type, and they appear automatically alongside the factory samples.
The sampler engine includes four instrument slots, covering clap, snare, closed hi-hat, and open hi-hat. You can run samples as polyphonic or mono one-shots, adjust pitch across +/-24 semitones, shape the envelope with a single control, use 24 dB/oct high-pass and low-pass filters, reverse playback, and set the master output level.
One especially handy workflow feature for me is drag-to-DAW export. When you like a loop, you can drag the audio straight to your DAW timeline. Instant renders it at the correct project tempo and pattern length, with parameter locks, filters, envelope changes, and shuffle baked into the loop.
