Developer Schulz Audio is offering Portacrunch 424, a cassette four-track gain-stage effect for macOS and Windows, as a free download.
There’s no expiry date listed on the Portacrunch 424 product page, and the summer sale had around 15 hours remaining at the time of writing, but it is unclear whether the giveaway ends with it. Schulz Audio says the free offer may end without notice, so I would move quickly.
To get this one for free, click the Buy button and complete checkout with a Schulz Audio account. I already had an account, so I did not have to register again.
The plugin and license then appear in your user area. On first launch, log in to that account inside the plugin to activate it. The installer alone does not secure a license once the giveaway ends.
I absolutely love cassette four-track recorders. I own a Tascam Portastudio 244 and have used it on several projects, including our free BPB Cassette Drums sample pack.
For me, the main attraction is simply that these machines are fun to use. My Portastudio 244 is definitely a lot slower than staying inside a DAW, but the change of pace is nice, and it delivers real cassette-style lo-fi crunch.
The plugin’s name makes me think that Schulz Audio emulated the Tascam Portastudio 424 here, a different machine from mine, but they did not clearly identify the actual hardware. Either way, Portacrunch 424 is a component-level recreation of a cassette four-track’s gain-stage circuit using True Circuit Simulation.
In Gain determines how hard you hit the circuit. Lower settings add subtle warmth and compression, while higher values produce thicker, grainier saturation. Low and High controls shape the frequency response, alongside Out Gain, Mix, and final Output controls.
Mono and Dual modes handle mono or stereo sources, and adjustable oversampling reduces aliasing at the cost of extra CPU use.
The cabinet simulation and Room control are interesting additions, particularly for guitars. The room blend is also fun as it adds near and far microphone ambiance, while the cabinet section offers several models.
Overall, I think it sounds okay. I would not replace my real Tascam with it, and plugins have never quite captured that cassette sound for me, but this is a cool way to try crunchy lo-fi tape-style processing for free.
The 3D interface looks polished, but I feel like its white background is way too bright for convenient use in a DAW. Also, a bit too much empty space goes to cables and background. I would prefer a shorter interface that gives more room to useful controls.
Apart from that, it is worth trying while free and could be a nice lo-fi addition to your arsenal.
Portacrunch 424 is available in VST2, VST3, AAX, and AU formats, with AU offered on macOS only. It supports 32-bit and 64-bit Windows systems, plus 64-bit Intel and M1 Macs natively or through Rosetta 2; a standalone version is also available.
