Why Your Hi-Hats Sound Stiff
You program a beat.
Kick on 1.
Snare on 2 and 4.
Then the hi-hats.
You click them in one by one.
It sounds…
Stiff.
Like a metronome.
Then you hear a trap beat with rolling hi-hats.
Or a house track with that busy, shuffling top end.
How do they do that?
They pick a different beat division.
That’s it.

Quick Summary
Every beat can be split into smaller pieces:
👉 Quarter notes — 1 per beat
👉 8th notes — 2 per beat
👉 16th notes — 4 per beat
👉 Triplets — 3 per beat
The tempo stays the same.
Only the number of notes inside each beat changes.
More slices = more energy.
1. 🧱 The Beat Is the Brick
Most songs are in 4/4.
Four beats in every bar.
Count it out loud:
1, 2, 3, 4.
Each of those beats is a quarter note.
Tap your foot.
That’s the quarter note.
Every other division is just that beat cut into smaller pieces.

2. ✂️ Cut It in Half: 8th Notes
Split every beat in two.
Count it:
1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
Eight notes in a bar.
That’s where 8th notes get their name.
You hear 8th-note hi-hats in a lot of rock and pop.
Steady.
Driving.
Easy to dance to.
3. 🔪 Cut It Again: 16th Notes
Split every 8th note in two.
Count it:
1 e & a, 2 e & a, 3 e & a, 4 e & a
Sixteen notes in a bar.
16th-note hi-hats sound busy and urgent.
You hear them all over hip-hop, funk and house.
Tip:
Don’t play every 16th at the same volume.
Turn down the “e” and the “a.”
The hi-hats start to breathe.

4. 🔺 Cut It in Three: Triplets
Now split each beat into three equal pieces.
Count it:
1 trip-let, 2 trip-let, 3 trip-let, 4 trip-let
Triplets roll.
They swing.
They pull against the straight beat underneath.
That’s the sound of trap hi-hat rolls.
And the shuffle in a blues song.
5. 🎛️ Set the Grid in Ableton Live
Open a MIDI clip.
The grid shows you which division you’re writing in.
Change it with these shortcuts (Mac first, then Windows):
👉 Cmd+1 / Ctrl+1 — narrow the grid (more slices)
👉 Cmd+2 / Ctrl+2 — widen the grid (fewer slices)
👉 Cmd+3 / Ctrl+3 — triplet grid on or off
👉 Cmd+4 / Ctrl+4 — snap to grid on or off
Or right-click the grid and choose a Fixed Grid size, like 1/8 or 1/16.
Played it in by hand and it’s messy?
Select the notes and press Cmd+U / Ctrl+U to quantize them to the grid.

⚔️ Beat Divisions Compared
| Division | Notes per Beat | Count It | Where You Hear It |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quarter notes | 1 | 1, 2, 3, 4 | Four-on-the-floor kicks |
| 8th notes | 2 | 1 & 2 & | Rock and pop hi-hats |
| 16th notes | 4 | 1 e & a | Hip-hop, funk and house hi-hats |
| Triplets | 3 | 1 trip-let | Trap rolls, blues shuffle |
⚖️ Too Busy vs. Too Plain
Too many 16ths…
And the beat turns into a wall of clicks.
Too many quarter notes…
And the beat never moves.
Just right is one busy part and the rest steady.
Busy hi-hats.
Simple kick.
Or a busy bass line and simple hi-hats.
🥷 Count It Before You Click It
Step 1
Put on a song you love.
Tap the quarter notes with your foot.
Step 2
Listen to the hi-hats.
Count along.
Is it “1 & 2 &”?
“1 e & a”?
Or “1 trip-let”?
Step 3
Set your Ableton Live grid to that division.
Program the same pattern.
Then turn down every other hit.
You don’t need more notes.
You need the right size slices.
