Justin Sheriff is offering De-Space, his so-called “bedroom studio cleanup” plugin, as a free download for one week only.
De-Space is listed as a pay-what-you-want product with a suggested $5 contribution, but you can enter zero and download it for free during the promotion. If you record vocals, acoustic instruments, podcasts, or voiceovers in an untreated room, I think this one is absolutely worth adding to your utility folder.
Justin Sheriff is an audio engineer, Berklee professor, and plugin developer. He first reached out to me a couple of months ago with a set of unusual free plugins built around creative workflow ideas, including Mystic 8, Spin the Bottle Panner, To-Do List, Alarm Clock, and Offset EQ.
De-Space is one of his more practical audio tools, and it is free this week for BPB readers to check out.
The plugin is designed to tackle three common home recording problems in one place. Echo reduces room reflections and reverb, Denoise handles hiss, hum, and background noise, and Gate cleans up silence between phrases.
Combining those three in one plugin totally makes sense. I’ve been recording on budget gear since the early 2000s, and a typical home-recorded vocal can definitely have some room tone, a bit of computer fan noise, and too much low-end buildup from the room.
De-Space is designed to clean up those issues quickly without requiring advanced audio restoration software.
The Tone section adds high-pass and low-pass filtering with 12, 24, and 48 dB slopes, plus low-frequency and high-frequency compensation. That should help with the final balance after the cleanup stages do their work, especially if the source starts sounding too thin or too dull.
The denoiser includes stereo link and LF/HF bias options, and the plugin has four quality modes. The latency ranges from an ultra-low-latency 12 ms mode to an ultra-quality 93 ms mode, so you can choose between faster monitoring and more detailed processing depending on the job.
I also like the simple interface. Instead of deep menus or lots of technical setup, De-Space gives you simple controls you can tweak and adjust by ear until the recording sounds cleaner.
De-Space is available for macOS in AU, VST3, and AAX formats, and for Windows in 64-bit VST3 format.
