You can now download Audio Assault’s Voice of Reason bass enhancer plugin for free.
Amp Locker is a collection of amp sims, cabs, and FX pedals that includes the Prestige 1950 (a British hot-rodded amp) and various cabs/pedals for free.
Mix Locker is a comprehensive mixing suite that includes ten free modules.
Additional amp sims and modules for each collection are typically available for around $5-$10.
Voice of Reason is the latest module we can now add to Mix Locker’s free virtual 500 Series setup.
Mix Locker is available in AU, VST3, and AAX formats for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
If Voice of Reason looks and sounds familiar, it’s because it’s based on the popular 500 Series module Voice of God by Little Labs.
The Voice of God module is kind of one of music’s happy accidents. Little Labs developed the module primarily with vocalists in mind. While using it on vocals remains a big part of its appeal, it has become the go-to choice for many producers, enhancing the low end without muddying the mix.
It’s highly effective at ensuring your kicks thump and every bass note hits as intended, with clarity, whether it’s an electric bass or a synth.
It’s also a not-so-secret secret weapon for 808s, and if you make hip hop beats (or any similar genre), it’s a no-brainer.
I haven’t used the original hardware, but I’ve used Universal Audio’s emulation and loved it, so I’m glad to see this free version on offer.
Voice of Reason mirrors the original hardware with two main control knobs: Amplitude and Frequency.
The Frequency knob lets you sweep the frequency between 20 and 300Hz.
As a sort of high-pass filter with a narrow Q, you get the desired boost while any unwanted mud below is rolled off.
The Center buttons dictate where the peak resonance is when the Frequency knob is centred. You can set this centre frequency to 40, 100, or 200Hz.
You also have a Flat button for a flat frequency response (not true bypass).
Voice of Reason provides a quick, easy way to position elements at the low end to prevent clashes.
Since the UAD version costs at least $49, Audio Assault’s Voice of Reason is a very welcome addition to Mix Locker!
