One Mic, Many Roles “The right tool doesn’t just capture sound. It shapes how you create.” When building a home studio, one of the first real decisions is the microphone. Two legends always come up: They look different. They’re both dynamic mics. They’re both used on professional records. But they serve very different roles. Quick Summary 👉 Choose the SM7B for vocals, podcasting, and voice recording. Choose the SM57 for guitars, drums, and general-purpose recording. If you need a vocal-ready version of the SM57, consider the SM58. Microphones 101: Which Mic Should I Buy for My Home Studio? …
Learn how Tony Award-winning Stereophonic captured the tone of a vintage studio onstage. With a staggering number of Tony Award nominations — including wins for Best Play, Best Sound Design for a Play, and Best Director — Stereophonic centers around a 1970s recording studio where an up-and-coming rock band records their new album while standing on the brink of superstardom. To recreate the warmth and fidelity of a classic analog studio live onstage, the production’s team turned to Universal Audio. Sound designer Ryan Rumery, music director Justin Craig, and composer Will Butler (formerly of Arcade Fire) developed a hybrid live-studio…
You’ve probably read our article about the free KERN CHECK spectral mono compatibility analyzer earlier this month. We absolutely loved it. CHECK shows you where your stereo image collapses in mono across 40 frequency bands, and it’s a very useful little diagnostic tool. The developer behind CHECK, Jonas R, also makes three paid mixing plugins that work as a chain alongside it. KERN Audio Bundle includes SMOOTH, WARM, and WIDE plugins. Each solves one specific mixing problem, and together with CHECK they form a complete mixing toolkit from a single developer for under $60. Jonas is a former touring musician…

1986 is the latest addition to The Crow Hill Company’s Vaults series, and it’s available in AU, VST, VST3, and AAX formats for macOS and Windows. As always, Vaults releases are free to download for six months before moving into the donationware category. At which point, they are available to purchase with a £3 donation, and all proceeds go to charity. The Crow Hill Company has given us some excellent instruments through the Vaults series, and if you’re new to these freebies, Dulcet Vocal and Harmonium are good starting points. 1986 is an instrument inspired by various aspects of 80s…
When a Studio Lives Inside a Rack When Reason first appeared, it felt like magic. Instead of a typical DAW timeline, you saw something different: A virtual rack of hardware gear. Synths. Samplers. Mixers. Cables. You could literally flip the rack around and patch cables between devices. For many producers, Reason was the first time software felt like a real studio. Now a new chapter begins. Reason Studios has been acquired by LANDR. Quick Summary 👉 LANDR acquired Reason to combine music creation tools with its existing services like mastering, distribution, and AI music tools, potentially creating an end-to-end platform…
Shadaloo Audio DSP has released H, a free tone and loudness enhancer plugin for macOS and Windows. H was built by Fabio “Shadaloo” Caterino, an Italian multi-platinum certified mix and mastering engineer. He originally designed the plugin for his own mixes and then decided to release it publicly as a pay-what-you-want download. First of all, I’ve tested numerous one-knob plugins before, but this is my first-ever one-letter plugin. So, a plugin named “A” would have been more fitting, but oh well… H is not a traditional saturator or clipper. It’s a multi-stage processor where the controls interact with each other…
Strange Audio is giving away two free copies of maniFold Omega FULL (worth €29 each) to BPB readers. We featured the free maniFold Σ experimental microlooper from the same developer last year, and it was included in our popular roundup of unusual free plugins released in 2025. maniFold Omega is a hybrid real-time effect processor that blends micro-looping, granular FX, spectral-style delay processing, and feedback-based textures. It’s built for experimental sound design, ambient layering, glitch textures, and abstract time-based transformations. I’m a sucker for plugins that let you texturize and glitch out the audio, and this one fits the bill.…
Cross The Bridge is a new free guitar amp suite by Marco Dodin, featuring ten vintage-style amplifier emulations and a treble booster in a single VST3 plugin. This is Marco Dodin’s first release, and I’m happy to feature it here. Indie developers are responsible for many of the best freeware plugins we’ve covered over the years, and I always enjoy sharing personal projects like this on BPB. Cross The Bridge was built with SynthEdit, which is something I haven’t seen in a long time. SynthEdit plugins were all the rage in the freeware plugin world around 2010-2015. We had some…
Audio Plugin Deals is offering the Singularis piano by SampleTekk for free for the next two weeks. The plugin normally costs $49. Singularis is a virtual piano instrument designed to recreate the sound of recordings from the late 1950s and early 1960s. Back then, studios worked with a few microphones, limited tape tracks, and most music was recorded live with very few overdubs. That workflow led to a specific sound that most of us will recognize from the movies and art of that era. I’m personally not a big fan of that sound (classic 80s child), but there definitely aren’t…
