Cross The Bridge is a new free guitar amp suite by Marco Dodin, featuring ten vintage-style amplifier emulations and a treble booster in a single VST3 plugin.
This is Marco Dodin’s first release, and I’m happy to feature it here. Indie developers are responsible for many of the best freeware plugins we’ve covered over the years, and I always enjoy sharing personal projects like this on BPB.
Cross The Bridge was built with SynthEdit, which is something I haven’t seen in a long time.
SynthEdit plugins were all the rage in the freeware plugin world around 2010-2015. We had some great ones back then, though they were often looked down on simply for being made with SynthEdit. Another big limitation was that SynthEdit plugins only worked on Windows.
The platform has improved a lot since then, and Cross The Bridge runs on both Windows and macOS. Still, this is one of the first SynthEdit-based plugins I’ve seen in ages, and it brings back some memories.
According to the developer, the plugin took about two years to build. Marco didn’t write custom code for it, but he spent a lot of time designing the internal signal chains, testing configurations, and fine-tuning the sound.
The amp tones are inspired by records from the 60s and 70s, and he tried to capture the character of those recordings rather than modeling specific real amplifiers.
The ten amp modes break down into three clean, four crunch, and three medium-to-high gain. Each amp has its own clipping behavior. You can push things further into high-gain territory by engaging the built-in treble booster.
All amps include a built-in cabinet simulation using impulse responses, with a switch to disable it if you prefer to use your own IRs. There’s also a global control section with a master volume, high-pass and low-pass filters, and a simple room reverb for ambience.
I haven’t tested this thoroughly yet (no guitar with me at the moment), but the visual design is pretty cool. There’s a lot of personality in the interface, and once again, I appreciate this being a one-person passion project.
Marco mentioned he plans to create more amp variations and some fuzz pedals in the future, so keep an eye on future releases if you enjoy this one.
One thing to note is that some antivirus programs may flag the plugin due to unsigned third-party distortion modules. These are false positives, a known issue with certain SynthEdit modules. The developer has addressed this on the product page.
