Aurora DSP has released GRIM3, a free overdrive plugin based on the feel of a guitar pedal.
You can put GRIM3 before an amp or amp sim and use it to tighten the low end, add a bit of midrange overdrive, or push the input stage harder. Aurora DSP optimized it for modern high-gain guitars, bass layers, and riff production.
However, I’m not a guitar player, but GRIM3 is the kind of plugin I usually try on synth basses, leads, and even drum loops to add a bit of grit. With the Blend knob, you can add a layer of dirt without replacing the original sound, and that’s often exactly what I want from this type of overdrive.
The rest of the interface is pretty self-explanatory if you’ve used pedal-style plugins before. You get Low and High tone controls, input gain, output level, and a Bite control for shifting the midrange focus.
That Blend control is the most interesting part for me because I like using guitar pedal-style plugins to process synths and build small virtual pedalboards from simple tools with different flavors.
Aurora DSP also included a tuner and metronome, which are handy extras for guitar players (my virtual synths are in tune, thank you very much).
GRIM3 is another addition to the already long list of Aurora DSP’s free pedal-style plugins, including Nosferatu and Goblyn. If you’re already covered for distortion, this isn’t something you need to rush to download, but it’s worth a try if you enjoy collecting different overdrive flavors.
You can download GRIM3 for free after logging in to an Aurora DSP account or creating a free account. It’s available for Windows and macOS.
