LØ has released Fragile Violins Free, a free violin sample library for Decent Sampler.
This one was released in June, but I somehow missed it, so a big thank you to BPB reader Eat More Candy for sharing it with our community. I would have missed it otherwise, and that would have been a shame because Fragile Violins Free is simply fantastic.
One thing to know upfront is that this is the free version, and it gives you one articulation. But what is included sounds so good and looks so polished that it still feels like an easy recommendation if you want inspiring string textures for free.
The interface and the sounds are right up there with paid sound libraries, in my opinion. The GUI is spectacular, the sound is equally fantastic, and it is incredible to get something this polished for free.
Sorry, I’m a bit hyped here, but this is the kind of sample library I love. It is packed with character and inspiration, and it’s definitely not just another cookie-cutter sound pack. I am almost sure that many producers will load this in their DAW and get new musical ideas from it within minutes.
Fragile Violins Free focuses on the quieter side of the violin. Instead of big polished Hollywood strings, it leans into bow noise, soft attacks, uneven pressure, free bowing movement, and the feeling of a real player sitting close to the microphone.
The samples are based on long violin performances, around 1:30 each, with multiple players feeding off each other. The result is constantly moving and evolving, without simply hitting a loop point. Each sample also has five round robins to keep the performance feeling alive.
The library relies heavily on the CC1 modulation wheel, which brings out extra textures and movement. The creator’s demo shows it going from beautiful and fragile to slightly off-kilter and then into much wilder textures.
There are three mix modes for each articulation. Mix is the normal version, Warp sends the samples through a broken Tascam 422 4-track, and Soma processes them through a Soma Lyra FX chain with extra analog filtering.
I love anything that involves a Tascam 4-track because those old machines are so good for adding grit and character to sounds. You can also hear it in my Analogue Drums pack on Flame Sound, which is currently free.
Fragile Violins Free runs in the free Decent Sampler plugin. It is available from PianoBook, and you need to log in to download it, but signing up is free.
