Flame Sound has released VATRA, a mix finisher and loudness enhancer plugin for Windows and macOS. The intro price of $39 is available until August 16.

As many of you already know, Flame Sound is my cinematic sound label. VATRA comes after almost two years of development, with countless iterations in the meantime.

I’ll write a longer separate article about the design and development process, but in short: I’ve spent fifteen years on BPB reviewing plugins, literally thousands of them.

And here’s the situation I kept running into countless times. The mix sounds fine on its own, but next to a reference it feels small and flat.

Then you compress it, and it gets louder but also flatter and duller. Clip it, and it’s louder but turns harsh. EQ the low end and it gets boomy instead of solid. So you stack five different plugins and second-guess all of them, because every move in one place costs you something in another.

Somewhere along the way, I started keeping a mental list of everything I wished existed in one box, tuned to work together and complement each other.

    VATRA is that plugin.

I love tools that do the heavy lifting under the hood while providing intuitive controls for the user. And I’ve always been impressed with hardware that makes the material sound better no matter how hard you push it.

That’s what you get with VATRA.

It distills my go-to processing workflow into five intuitive controls for adding loudness, enhancing detail, and refining the tone of a sound. It does a lot on the inside, yet you only ever touch five knobs.

    What it does

VATRA is a loudness processor, transient shaper, and sound enhancer for mixing and mastering.

The entire workflow fits into five intuitive controls:

    • IGNITE is the heart of VATRA. A dual-stage density engine that boosts loudness by filling the space between peaks, so your signal gets bigger and fatter without squashing the dynamics.
    • HEAT is tasteful tape saturation that goes from gentle glue all the way to grit if you push it.
    • PUNCH restores transient attack and keeps your material from going flat.
    • WEIGHT adds body by saturating the low frequencies instead of simply turning them up. You get massive, focused bass without the mud.
    • AIR smoothly excites the upper frequencies for adding sparkle and clarity without harshness.

We calibrated VATRA to work equally well on full mixes and individual channels. It’s as happy on a master bus as it is on a dull vocal, a thin bassline, or a drum bus that needs punch and weight.

    YouTube video

By the way, louder almost always sounds better, and that can make mixing tricky.

Use the OUT fader to match levels and make decisions based on quality instead of loudness. Also, automatic gain compensation is the first item on the list for an update that’s already in the works (more on lifetime free updates below).

    Zero AI

This part wouldn’t be relevant a couple of years ago when I started working on VATRA, but I think it’s important to share now.

VATRA is 100% human-made. We used zero AI while developing the code, designing the interface, or making the presets. It went from being a paper sketch to a GUI-less plugin concept to what it is today.

In other words, we did it the old-school way, with countless iterations of the design and DSP until it felt right, and that’s a big part of why it took almost two years to finish.

    No license managers

I’ve reviewed enough plugins on BPB to know how much we all hate copy protection, so VATRA has none of it. You buy it, you download it, you load it in your DAW.

There’s nothing to activate, and it works 100% offline (you only need the connection to download it, of course).

    Lifetime free updates

Everyone who buys VATRA gets lifetime free updates. This includes minor and major updates (when VATRA reaches v2.0, the update will be free to everyone who already owns VATRA).

Try it before you buy it

There’s a free 7-day trial of the full plugin with every feature unlocked. There’s no signup or email required. You can simply download it directly from the website. Run it on your own mixes and decide with your own ears.

    Thank you

To everyone who has read BPB over the years, downloaded a freebie, left a comment, or supported the site: thank you. None of this happens without you.

And also, a special thanks to the beta testers who hammered on VATRA for weeks, and to the artists who let us use their music in the demos.

    Availability

VATRA runs on macOS 11 or later (Intel and Apple Silicon) and Windows 10 or later, in VST3 and AU formats.

It’s $39 as an intro price until August 16, then $49 until September 1, then $69 after that. Lifetime free updates are included with every purchase.
