NoiseAsh offers Backs EQ as a limited-time free download for macOS and Windows. The EQ is normally priced at $90 but is currently available at no cost.
Backs EQ combines Baxandall-style curves with a few modern twists. The main idea here, though, is that the workflow is straightforward enough that you could get around it quickly if you want to quickly enhance the sound of a track without thinking too much about precision or surgical EQ moves.
The plugin offers the classic low and high shelving filters you’d expect, along with continuous high-pass and low-pass filters.
You also get an extra mid band, which makes it more flexible than a strict Baxandall recreation. If you want a gentle, broad EQ for shaping low end or adding air without fighting harsh resonances, this is a handy little setup.
There’s also a tube-style preamp that adds saturation. You can dial in more harmonic content with a THD control, so it’s easy to move from a clean tone-shaping tool to something that adds a bit of weight or edge.
That said, I appreciate that the preamp can be bypassed entirely, because sometimes it’s nice to have the EQ without additional color.
Backs EQ behaves predictably when making wider adjustments, which is sometimes what I need when I’m trying to correct or balance a sound without introducing peaks.
So, although this plugin doesn’t offer anything spectacular or new, it’s nice to have in specific scenarios. For quick mix moves like lifting a dull top end, clearing low-mid clutter, or smoothing a harsh element, the layout makes it easy to get the job done.
This limited-time free offer applies to the standard Backs EQ plugin, not the expanded Backs Pro version from the full collection. Still, the included feature set is enough to handle basic tone shaping, bus work, and general cleanup.
As always with NoiseAsh freebies, you’ll need an account to authorize the plugin, but the process is simple.
Backs EQ is available in VST3 and AAX formats for Windows 7 and above, and in VST3, AU, and AAX formats for macOS 10.9.5 and above. It supports Intel and Apple Silicon machines (AAX is Intel-only on macOS). A minimum 1024×768 display is required, and the plugin is 64-bit only.
