Importing Video into Ableton Live
Getting video into Live is straightforward when your files are ready.
-
Drag and drop a .mov, .mp4 (H.264), .m4v, or .avi file into Arrangement View.
-
Ableton Live Suite and Standard versions support video import; Live Intro and Live Lite do not.
-
If import fails, convert your file to MP4 or MOV using a free converter like Handbrake.
Playback Optimization & Limitations
Video playback in Live works best when the file is well-formatted:
-
Use MOV or MP4 with H.264 codec for best compatibility.
-
Videos with frequent keyframes (every frame or every two) play
more smoothly.
-
On Windows, Live 12 includes built-in codecs. Earlier versions require installing Haali Media Splitter (up to 1080p).

Exporting Audio + Video
Ready to render your final piece?
-
Use File → Export Audio/Video to bake in audio to the video.
-
On macOS, enable Encode PCM if “Create Video” is greyed out.
-
Adjust resolution, frame rate (24 or 30 fps), and bitrate for a balance of quality and file size.
Audio Types for Video Projects
Understanding what audio to layer over video helps your project feel cinematic and professional:
-
SFX (Sound Effects): Mechanical or environmental sounds—doors, wind, footsteps
-
Foley: Custom-recorded, expressive sound effects synced precisely to action
-
Dialogue: Voice or spoken words, placed for clarity and timing
-
Music Score: Background music that supports emotion and pacing
Each audio type serves its own purpose and should be placed on separate tracks for control and balance.
