Audio Damage has released Evil Otto, a free OTT-style multiband compressor for desktop. The iOS version is a separate $2.99 purchase in the App Store.

We have seen quite a few OTT-inspired plugins in the last couple of years, including 8TT by Discrete Signals and Cramit by Sixth Sample, both of which are solid takes on the original OTT concept by Xfer Records.
Evil Otto is another one worth paying attention to, especially coming from a developer with Audio Damage’s track record. I am a big fan of their work and have used their plugins a lot over the years, including Dubstation, Filterstation, ADverb, and of course, the Tattoo drum machine (ah, the memories!).
Many of those are now free on their Free and Legacy page, which is worth checking out if you have not already.
What I like about Evil Otto is the visual approach. The interface is classic Audio Damage, crisp and clean, with a nice color scheme and a scrolling waveform display that overlays the input and output signals in real time.
That visual feedback makes it much easier to understand how the multi-band compression is shaping your signal compared to the original OTT, which gives you very little to look at. In my opinion, Evil Otto is easier to use than the original.
The plugin splits your audio into three frequency bands (low, mid, high) and applies simultaneous upward and downward compression to each band independently.
The main controls are Depth (overall compression intensity), Time (attack and release speed), and separate Down Amount and Up Amount knobs for controlling the strength of peak reduction and detail boosting. Each band has its own threshold and output level control, so you can fine-tune how the compression interacts with different parts of the frequency spectrum.
Evil Otto also includes an external sidechain input with a listen mode for verifying your routing, a bypass with smooth crossfade for clean A/B comparison, and a preset browser with import, export, favorites, and randomized naming.
There is a settings panel where you can toggle tooltips, the scrolling waveform animation, and glow effects, plus switch to an alternate Outrun color scheme.
Evil Otto is available in CLAP, VST3, and AAX on Windows (10+) and macOS (10.13+, Universal Binary), with AU also available on macOS. Linux users get CLAP, VST3, and LV2 (Ubuntu 20+). The iOS version is available as AUv3.
