UVI PX Guitar Syn is a hybrid virtual instrument that merges vintage guitar synth sounds with modern sound design. You can get it for just $29 at AudioDeluxe (regular price $79) until August 31st.
PX Guitar Syn is based on the GS-500 guitar and its companion GR-500 synth engine. It’s an analog guitar synthesizer system from 1977 that predates MIDI.
These were ambitious instruments in their day, offering expressive guitar-based control over synth elements through CV and gate. If you love quirky vintage instruments with an unusual character, this one’s definitely for you.
UVI has brought the GS-500 concept back to life, sampling both the guitar and synth and turning them into a versatile instrument that captures the original’s unusual sound character.
The library offers a dual-layer engine with over 300 presets, spanning basses, leads, pads, FX, keys, and more. Each layer can be individually edited, with controls for envelopes, filters, pitch, stereo imaging, and modulation.
You can also layer patches for creating huge textures or unusual instrument blends. This is my favorite way of using this type of instrument. It usually sounds best with a few layers that add interest to the sound.
I also like UVI’s approach to making sampled instruments. PX Guitar Syn, like the rest of UVI’s sample-based arsenal, has some serious tone-shaping potential.
UVI didn’t just sample the original hardware. They enhanced it using classic stompboxes, preamps, and studio effects. For instance, they ran sounds through fuzz pedals, phasers, and a vintage S550 Tape Echo for the chorus mode.
The result is a library that doesn’t just replicate the past but adds to its potential with modern sampling techniques and studio gear.
The UI is intuitive, featuring quick layer switching and a wide range of sound design options. I really liked how the Modwheel section allows you to assign multiple functions for vibrato, tremolo, and filter modulation simultaneously.
The inclusion of dual arpeggiators is another cool feature, especially when each one is controlling a different layer. It adds depth and rhythmic complexity to your patches without needing to dive into complex sequencing.
If you enjoy hybrid instruments with a bit of vintage grit, PX Guitar Syn is well worth exploring. It’s fun and super fun to use in tandem with modern synths. It runs in UVI Workstation (free) or Falcon and is compatible with most DAWs via VST, VST3, AU, and AAX formats on macOS and Windows.
