ModMan is a free Perlin noise modulation plugin by UnplugRed, a developer we’ve covered multiple times on BPB.
If you’re new to UnplugRed, consider checking out Diet Audio and Magic Carpet, two plugins that provide a good indication of the developer’s style and approach.
Like previous UnplugRed releases, ModMan doesn’t follow the most traditional path. ModMan is based on a Perlin noise algorithm, which perhaps allows for a more natural and organic progression of movement and modulation.
Perlin noise is a type of gradient noise, or more specifically, a procedural generation algorithm, created by Ken Perlin in 1983. Perlin’s gradient noise formula became invaluable in the visual arts, allowing the generation of natural-looking terrain and textures in games and video.
In audio, you may not hear the name Ken Perlin often, but on a conversational level, his work has a significant impact.
In addition to Perlin noise, ModMan offers multiple shapes and various parameters for fine-tuning.
At the bottom of the typically quirky interface, you’ll see controls for Speed, Master Speed, and Stereo.
You can use the modulation source to modulate any of the four built-in effects: Tape Drift, Saturation, Lowpass (and resonance), and Amplitude.
As Melody (UnplugRed) suggests on the product page, you can use ModMan to add movement to pads, widen the stereo field, create tape-style effects, or experiment with bizarre settings.
UnplugRed plugins all have a few things in common; they have a distinct look and sound, they are fun and functional, and there’s always method to the madness, so there’s a level of order.
However, I think the word experiment above best sums up Melody’s work because every one of her plugins provides ample opportunity to stray from the beaten path, and that’s often where creativity lies.
Of course, there’s equal opportunity to go horribly wrong, but that’s part of the fun.
ModMan is free to download with a visual banner, but you can pay to remove the banner by becoming a Patreon ($5 or higher).
ModMan is available in AU, VST3, and CLAP formats for macOS, Windows, and Linux operating systems.
