TapeFi has released STOP, a freeware tape/vinyl stop simulator plugin for Windows and macOS.
If you checked out TapeFi’s first plugin FAIL, you’ll know their approach to the lo-fi aesthetic.
Fail emulated broken cassette tapes to the point of sounding borderline mangled, but in a good way (if you wanted that kind of warbly, degraded tape tone). I liked FAIL despite how extreme it was, especially when trying to add plenty of lo-fi character to clean sounds.
Now, with STOP, TapeFi is tackling a different kind of lo-fi classic known as the vinyl stop effect. It’s that pitch-dropping slowdown you hear when someone powers off a turntable mid-playback.
It’s a trick that’s been used on countless records and mixes, either as a subtle background effect or an intentional way to exaggerate the drop or a breakdown. Now it’s available in a sleek little free plugin from TapeFi.
Interestingly, we’ve seen a couple of other free plugins in the same space recently, including Cal Goheen’s cStop and Sotto Spindown from Sottovoce DSP. But if you don’t already have your vinyl pitch-stop bases covered, TapeFi’s STOP is worth a spin.
The interface is clean and easy to navigate, with a big STOP button front and center as the main control. There’s also a pitch range selector, curve control on the right, and four modulation-style controls across the bottom: Pitch, Step, Digi, and Wash.
These controls on the bottom let you customize the slowdown effect with glitchy stutters, lo-fi digital crunch, and ambient reverb/delay tails.
The Curve control super is handy for customizing the effect. Use it if you want to make the pitch drop feel abrupt and snappy or stretch it out into a slow descent.
The GUI is dark-themed and fully resizable by dragging the bottom-right corner. No surprises there, just a clean and practical design, so kudos for that.
My favorite feature is the Wash control. It adds a lush ambient tail that works perfectly with synth parts or pads. I’m sure you’ve heard it in synthwave breakdowns, and it’s a great way to give the pitch stop effect some extra weight.
STOP is free to download from the TapeFi website. You’ll need to provide a valid email address to get the download link.
The plugin runs natively on Windows and macOS and is available in VST, VST3, and AU formats (64-bit only).
