X-Saturator hits that formula just as well as the rest of the SSL plugin lineup. It’s a distortion/saturation effect that lets you blend between tube-style even-order harmonics and transistor-style odd-order harmonics.
I’ve always liked saturation plugins that don’t focus on a single type of harmonic distortion (case in point being our free BPB Saturator plugin).
In the X-Saturator, the Harmonics knob gives you control over the flavor of distortion, while Drive, Depth, and Shape determine how intense, present, and bright the harmonics become.
With low Drive settings, you can add warmth or help dull instruments poke through a crowded mix. But if you push it, X-Saturator gets aggressive fast. There’s no shortage of character here if you’re after something gritty or borderline mangled.
One thing I appreciate is how SSL includes genuinely useful workflow features without complicating the interface. The Headroom button adds another 6 dB of internal headroom, meaning you can crank Drive far harder without digital clipping. This is great when you want heavy distortion but still need control.
The wet/dry Mix knob makes parallel saturation easy, and the built-in A/B switch lets you compare two sets of settings.
