SSL Native Channel Strip 2 is based on the processing blocks of SSL’s analog consoles, with the workflow and tone of the SSL 9000K channel strip.
It gives you EQ, filters, compression, and gate/expander processing in a single plugin, and for me, that is still the fastest way to quickly fix a channel without stacking half a dozen separate processors.
The EQ section is a classic four-band design with parametric low-mid and high-mid bands, plus low and high shelving bands that can switch to bell curves. The EQ can switch between E-Series and G-Series characteristics, giving you a choice between two familiar SSL-style responses.
SSL also includes its proprietary Anti-Cramping technology in the EQ section. It is designed to keep high-frequency bell curves from behaving awkwardly near the top of the frequency range, without needing to rely only on oversampling.
The dynamics section includes a compressor/limiter and a gate/expander. The compressor can switch between softer RMS-style behavior and peak detection for more obvious control, while the gate/expander has hold, range, release, and fast attack options.
You also get variable high-pass and low-pass filters, external sidechain input, sidechain processing with the filters or EQ, and flexible routing so you can rearrange the order of the processing blocks. The compressor mix control is useful if you want parallel compression without setting up an extra bus.
Channel Strip 2 also integrates with SSL 360, and it is designed for hands-on control with SSL’s UC1, UF8, and UF1 hardware controllers. That will not matter to everyone, but if you are already in the SSL hardware/software ecosystem, it is an awesome feature.
