Smiarx has released ÆLAPSE, a free delay and reverb plugin for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
ÆLAPSE combines two classic effects in a single plugin: a tape-style delay and a reverb inspired by spring reverbs.
While the reverb has a lovely lo-fi character, it isn’t locked into traditional spring sounds. You can push it into more spacious, modern territory if needed, so it’s far more versatile than the initial impressions might suggest.
This delay-and-reverb combo is ideal for guitars and dub-style processing. I’ve written recently about my fascination with dub effects, particularly spring reverbs, in the SSL SpringVerb article, and ÆLAPSE scratches that same itch nicely.
You get an excellent sound and all the polish we’d expect with paid plugins, but here it’s available as a free download.
Compared to the reverb, the delay section is relatively simple, but in a good way. It’s based on a tape-delay architecture and delivers some pretty sweet delay sounds without deep technical tweaking.
In addition to the usual delay time, feedback, and drive controls, you also get a Drift parameter that introduces subtle instability to the delayed signal. This slight unpredictability is perfect for dub-style echoes.
There are also high-pass and low-pass filters for shaping the delay repeats, allowing the echoes to gradually brighten or dull over time.
The reverb module offers more detailed control. Parameters like Shape, Scatter, Chaos, and Tone let you sculpt the reverb’s character, while Length and Damping control the overall space and decay.
You can also adjust the stereo width, which makes it easy to dial in anything from narrow reverbs for guitars and percussion to wide textures for synths and effects.
It’s also handy that you can disable either the delay or the reverb section, which basically means you can use ÆLAPSE as a standalone delay or reverb plugin if that suits your workflow better.
The design deserves a mention, too. It’s an absolute beauty. It’s clean and super easy to understand, with all parameters clearly laid out on a single panel.
My favorite visual detail is the animated spring, which reacts to incoming audio and changes as you tweak the reverb controls. Again, it adds a bit of personality that we’d typically expect only in a paid plugin.
One thing is for sure. Freeware plugins have come a long way.
ÆLAPSE is available as a free download from Smiarx’s GitHub page. The plugin supports VST, AU, and LV2 formats and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
