R. Kelly‘s legal team has alleged that a prison staffer administered an overdose of medications to their client, this after lawyers previously asserted that an inmate had been enlisted to kill the singer behind bars.
In short, per a report from TMZ citing a filing from Kelly’s attorney Beau B. Brindley, the singer has accused a staff member in the solitary confinement area of a North Carolina prison of giving him a potentially fatal amount of medications on June 12. As further alleged by Brindley, this led to Kelly being taken to a local hospital, where he reportedly stayed for two days. Kelly’s legal team is also claiming that their client has been denied a surgery aimed at remedying an alleged blood clot issue.
When reached for comment by Complex on Tuesday, a Bureau of Prisons rep offered the following:
“For privacy, safety, and security reasons, we do not discuss the conditions of confinement for any incarcerated individual, including medical and health-related issues. Additionally, the Bureau of Prisons does not comment on pending litigation or matters that are the subject of legal proceedings.”

As for that previously reported allegation of being targeted in a would-be prison assassination, the Chicago Sun-Times reported on Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Julien’s response to such claims on Monday. Per Julien, Kelly “has never taken responsibility for his years of sexually abusing children.” Julien also took issue with the nature of the argument presented by Kelly’s legal team, who have been pushing for a release from custody.
In 2022, Kelly received a 30-year sentence for his federal conviction one year prior on racketeering predicated on criminal conduct including sexual exploitation of children, forced labor, and multiple Mann Act violations. The three-time Grammy winner was also convicted and sentenced in connection with child sex crimes in Illinois.
