Pulsar Audio is giving away Smasher, its €49 FET compressor plugin, as a free perpetual license.
If the name sounds familiar, it should. We’ve covered Smasher being free four times before, going back to 2020. If you’ve somehow missed it every single time, here’s another chance.
And I’m having a hard time coming up with new headlines for these articles. Maybe next time I’ll just go with “Pulsar Audio Smasher is FREE again and again and again..”
Smasher is a focused compressor built around one specific 1176 trick. Rather than emulating the full 1176 with all its ratio options and controls, it locks in the all-buttons-in mode (sometimes called “British mode”) and gives you a three-knob interface.
In this mode, all four ratio buttons are engaged simultaneously, which changes the bias voltages in the circuit and produces an unusually aggressive, saturated compression sound. It’s the same setting behind some of the most well-known drum tones in rock history.
The three controls are Input Gain, Output, and Mix. Input Gain effectively sets the threshold, so you simply raise it to increase compression and drive more saturation. Output compensates for the level, and Mix lets you blend the processed signal with the dry signal for parallel compression, which is where Smasher is most useful.
I like the workflow here. It’s pretty quick, and you can push the compression hard and use the Mix knob to dial back the blend until you get added density and harmonic richness without losing the transient punch.
Pulsar models the circuit using its Topology Preservation Technology, which, according to their docs, recreates the specific behavior of all-buttons-in mode, including changes in bias voltage.
That’s what sets Smasher apart from a standard 1176 emulation, because you’re supposed to get more saturation, more color, and a more aggressive character overall.
In my opinion, it works very well on drum buses, room mics, bass, and vocals when you want grit. It’s a one-trick pony, but it’s a good trick, and it’s useful to have around even when you only reach for it occasionally.
