Plugin Boutique is offering BFD 3.5, the flagship acoustic drum instrument from BFD, at an 80% discount until February 14. This brings the price down to $39 from the regular $199.
BFD 3.5 is a full-scale virtual drum studio designed for realistic acoustic drum production. Instead of focusing on quick loop-based workflows, it aims to replicate the entire process of recording, editing, and mixing a real drummer in a professional studio environment.
That’s the main reason why I prefer BFD 3 over most other acoustic drum instruments. It really feels like you’re working with real recorded drums that you can tweak and adjust to your content. That philosophy runs through every part of the plugin, from the deep sample library to the internal mixer and groove engine.
The core library includes 51 acoustic drum kits and 60 mix-ready presets. Each kit is built from multi-velocity samples with extensive articulations, including different stick positions, rim shots, cymbal zones, and hi-hat openness.
Every articulation is recorded through multiple microphones, with close mics, overheads, room channels, and additional ambience options routed into BFD’s internal mixer. This allows you to shape the drum sound much as you would in a real recording session.
Again, this flexibility is the main reason why I enjoy using BFD 3 so much. Another reason is that I purchased the old (and now sadly discontinued) budget edition, BFD Eco, ages ago. I fell in love with the workflow and later upgraded to the full version.
Sound editing in BFD goes far beyond simple tuning and volume adjustments. The Drum Editor allows you to dampen drums, fine-tune pitch per articulation, control velocity response, and adjust microphone balance on a per-drum basis.
BFD 3.5 also introduces modeled tom resonance, cymbal swell behavior, and improved dynamics matching between kit pieces. These modeling elements help the kit respond more naturally, especially during fast fills and cymbal-heavy passages.
The built-in mixer is my favorite part of the workflow. Each drum channel can host inserts and sends, with 48 included effects covering EQ, compression, transient shaping, distortion, filtering, and reverb.
Thirteen of these effects come from AIR Music Tech and can be used either as inserts or aux sends. If you prefer external processing, BFD 3.5 supports multi-output routing so each microphone channel can be sent to its own DAW track.
There’s also an offline audio export function that lets you bounce multi-channel drum stems directly from the plugin.

To help you with performance and songwriting if you don’t like building rhythms from scratch, BFD 3.5 includes a comprehensive Groove Engine. The factory content features 82 Groove Palettes and dozens of individual patterns played by real drummers.
Grooves can be auditioned in sync with your project, edited inside the Groove Editor, humanized, quantized, or rearranged into full drum tracks. MIDI drag-and-drop makes it easy to move grooves into your DAW for further editing.
I’ve always seen BFD as one of the most complete acoustic drum solutions available. If you already have a drum instrument you rely on, this may not be essential. But if you don’t have a go-to acoustic drum plugin yet, this deal feels close to a no-brainer at this price.
BFD 3.5 is available in VST3, AU, AAX, and standalone formats. It runs on Windows 10 and newer, and macOS 12 and newer, with Apple Silicon AAX support included.
By the way, if you purchase this, you’re also getting Minimal Audio Cluster Delay or Thenatan TAWUS for free.
