Playboi Carti doesn’t seem too happy with Ye after the latter dropped a new song “Alive,” featuring NBA YoungBoy.
Some fans thought the release, which samples Carti’s song “CRANK,” was legally cleared and possibly signaled a truce. However, that notion was quickly thrown out when Carti took to his Opium Instagram account with a music video for his version of the track and the caption, “DIS MY SONG LIL BRA @ye.”
It’s unclear how the tracks, both of which feature NBA YoungBoy, made it into Ye’s possession.
Sneako, a streamer that Ye has been hanging out with over the past month, claims “ALIVE” does not belong to Carti because he didn’t make the beat.
“Ye made the beat, clearly,” Sneako said. “If you listen to Carti’s version, it’s not good.”
Meanwhile, NBA YoungBoy dropped a solo song, “Finest,” mere hours after Ye shared their collaboration.
This isn’t the first time the artist formerly known as Kanye West has released music without legally clearing a work from its original artist.
Last February, Ye and Ty Dolla Sign were sued by the estate of the late Donna Summer for an “unauthorized interpolation” of her hit “I Feel Love” to create “Good (Don’t Die)” from Vultures 1.
After the song was removed from DSPs, the duo settled the lawsuit for an undisclosed amount four months later.
Ye also faced clearance issues with Ozzy Osbourne for sampling a 1983 live performance of “War Pigs,” and reportedly did not solicit the Backstreet Boys nor their team for his remake of “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back).”
Tensions between Carti and Ye have been ongoing for months.
After Carti released his MUSIC album in March, Ye made several negative comments about the project, including that he wasn’t a fan of Kendrick Lamar’s contributions to the LP. Eventually, those comments later prompted Carti to tweet, “YE STFU.”
