Pitch Innovations releases Sonic Atlas, a FREE sampled instrument that takes you around the world.
We are used to Pitch Innovations being, well, innovative.
The India-based developer is passionate about exploring new and creative ways to make beautiful music, and we’ve seen that with products like Groove Shaper and Fluid Chords 2.
However, Sonic Atlas takes the creative approach to a new level. As the name suggests, Sonic Atlas will deliver a collection of sounds from various regions around the globe; for now, the concept has launched with India.
The available region features three packs that bring together classic Bollywood melodies (Bollywood Gold), Desi grooves (Desi Dance), and Punjabi beats (Punjabi Pulse).
Sonic Atlas is available in AU, VST, VST3, AAX, and Standalone formats for macOS (10.15 or later) and Windows (8 or later).
To claim Sonic Atlas for free, head to Plugin Boutique and add it to your library, where you can download the current version.
Each available region provides a songstarter pack with instruments quintessential to the area’s sound and culture. The sounds are arranged into melodies, drums, and one-shots.
The interface features a three-octave keyboard, with each octave representing a particular category of sound, making it easy to perform melodies, grooves, and hits simultaneously. Similar to Excite Audio’s Bloom Vocal Edit Lite (which is free with any purchase at Plugin Boutique until November 14), you can modify samples on the fly with key triggers for reverse, half/double-time, stutter effects, and more.
Additionally, you can edit each sample individually using a fairly comprehensive sample edit page.
There are macro controls for built-in effects, including reverb, delay, drive, and compression.
It’s definitely interesting; the sounds are playable, customizable, and perhaps not something all of us hear every day.
What I like about the current selection is that you get the traditional sounds of India with a modern twist, and I’m excited to hear what comes next and where it’s from.
While it’s not an entirely new concept (UVI World Suite 3 provides a massive collection of world instruments and loops), Sonic Atlas may be the first to use a world globe for region selection. If you know of any others, please add them in the comments.
Having a nice Globe to spin while selecting sounds won’t make anything sound better, but the imagery makes it easier to establish a connection between a place and sound in your mind. Having high-quality sounds is always the priority, but learning about different cultures through sound is a welcome bonus.
Sonic Atlas features sounds from exceptional musicians; it could become extremely expansive, it’s a fun idea, and it’s free; a Google Earth for sound, kind of.
Good stuff.
