Loopmasters has been re-acquired by its original founder, Matt Pelling, marking a rare moment in today’s music tech world where a beloved company returns to independent ownership.
Loopmasters and its Loopcloud platform were sold to Beatport in 2020. Since then, Matt stepped away to focus on new projects, including his role at Rhodes Music Group. But as he explains, stepping back also reminded him how much he missed the company he built.
With nearly three decades in the sampling world, Matt watched the evolution from CD-ROM products to modern subscription ecosystems, and the current mix of AI-assisted tools and handcrafted instruments seems to have reignited his passion for steering Loopmasters’ future.
Beatport will keep Plugin Boutique and the other software-related divisions, but Loopmasters and Loopcloud are now back under Matt’s leadership.
To me, this feels like good news for everyone who values independent creative companies. We’re so used to seeing small and mid-sized developers get swallowed up by larger groups that it’s easy to forget the other direction is even possible.
This story hits a bit closer to home for me, too. I met Matt years ago when Loopmasters supported Bedroom Producers Blog’s coverage of NAMM and Musikmesse around 2015–2016.
He genuinely cares about producers and the tools they use, which isn’t something you can always say in an industry increasingly shaped by mergers and corporate priorities. Knowing he’s back at the helm makes me optimistic about where Loopmasters and Loopcloud can go next.
I think moments like this are worth highlighting, even if they’re not “plugin news” in the usual BPB sense.
When companies and developers retain their identity, you feel it in the products: the risks they take with development, the focus on user experience, the willingness to support niche styles, and the long-term commitment to making their products solid. Seeing Loopmasters return to its roots is a reminder that this kind of direction is still possible.
So, here’s wishing Matt and the Loopmasters team all the best as they write the next chapter. And here’s hoping more companies in our space can keep operating independently rather than becoming part of ever-growing partnerships.
