Knock Audio offers the KNOCK Clipper, a streamlined hard/soft clipper plugin for macOS and Windows, for free for a limited time (regular price $49).
KNOCK Clipper is the standalone version of the clipping module from Knock Audio’s flagship KNOCK plugin. And generally speaking, it’s inspired by the punchy, saturated tone of his Drums That Knock sound packs.
The last time we covered Knock Clipper, it was free with any purchase at Plugin Boutique. But if you missed that offer, you can now get it for free without purchasing anything else.
If you’re into modern electronic music, you’re already familiar with that sound. It’s quite aggressive, but still musical and pleasing to the ear.
So if you want to add something along those lines to your projects, this mini plugin distills that exact vibe into a single knob and a simple interface.
The workflow is dead simple. You have a continuously variable Hard/Soft Clip curve, input and output controls, and an optional HQ oversampling mode, which you should absolutely keep on.
Oversampling is essential on any distortion-heavy processor to avoid nasty digital artifacts, and it’s great that Knock Audio included it here without introducing a huge increase in CPU.
Another nice bonus is the zero-latency processing, so you can use this plugin while tracking without worrying about any lag issues.
The clipping ranges from warm and round to sharp and super aggressive, and there’s a surprising number of sweet spots in between.
My favorite feature is definitely the variable clipping curve alone. You don’t often get this in free clippers and it lets you finetune the clipper’s response until it’s exactly what you need.
If you want a lightweight clipper you can throw on dozens of tracks without hammering your CPU, this is definitely worth grabbing while it’s free.
KNOCK Clipper is available in 64-bit VST3, AU, and AAX formats for macOS (Intel & Apple Silicon, macOS 11+) and Windows (8.1, 10, 11). You’ll need around 500 MB of disk space and at least 8 GB of RAM.
