Gunplay blames his estranged wife’s alleged mental health issues for the 2023 incident that led to his arrest.
In a clip of his upcoming interview with K. Foxx on 99 Jamz Miami, the rapper broke his silence about the incident, where he allegedly threatened wife Vonshae Taylor-Morales with an AK-47 while she held their baby.
“Who does that, bro?” said the 45-year-old rapper when asked about the situation. “I was just at Fleming’s Steakhouse the night of, and like a couple hours later, I woke up and I was, like, in a cell with two bologna sandwiches and a jumper. I couldn’t understand what just happened.”
Gunplay, real name Richard Welton Morales Jr., said the situation left him blindsided. “She just flipped the switch out of nowhere and, you know hindsight is 20/20 when I just look at [it]overall,” he explained.

He continued, “I did my research, okay? and the things that she fell under were NPD, that’s narcissistic personality disorder, and it’s a real disorder that people don’t go get diagnosed for because they don’t feel that nothing’s wrong. They live in their own bubble, their own reality, they have their own delusions … that’s a protective shell around them.”
On the other hand, Gunplay says he “always knew” he would be vindicated.
“I always knew I was gonna be vindicated cause I didn’t do anything, but I just knew that this was gonna be a process I was gonna have to go through by myself. This was gonna be a spiritual journey that I was gonna have to go through by myself.”
Gunplay was arrested in August 2023 on multiple charges, including aggravated battery, false imprisonment, and child abuse. Authorities allege he pointed an AK-47 at his wife and their six-month-old baby during an argument, though he denies the claims. The rapper was being held at Miami’s Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center before being released on bond.
