Solid State Logic has released SpringVerb, a vintage-inspired spring reverb plugin for macOS and Windows, and it’s currently available at a discount along with some pretty awesome bonus freebies at Plugin Boutique.
I’ve had a soft spot for spring reverb ever since I fell down the dub music rabbit hole roughly 25 years ago (Your Teeth In My Neck by Scientist being the main culprit).
My wife absolutely hates it, so I rarely get away with playing dub for too long in the car, but even she can’t deny there’s something hypnotic about it (although not in a good way if you ask her).
Dub manages to be chill and groovy while also being deeply technical and, from the production standpoint, a bit nerdy. The gear is a massive factor in dub, and without delays and spring reverbs, the genre simply wouldn’t exist in the form we know today.
Once that obsession kicked in, spring reverb started creeping into my own productions. I still use it all the time, often not as an obvious reverb effect, but as a subtle seasoning.
Just a tiny touch of spring on a channel can add sparkle and character without screaming “reverb,” and it’s often more about vibe than space for me.
So it’s probably no surprise that BPB has its own free spring reverb plugin, BPB Spring. But it’s always interesting to see how the big players approach the same idea, and SSL’s take is a good example.
SSL SpringVerb is part of the company’s ‘Verb’ collection and is modeled on classic spring tanks used across decades of recordings, from rock and pop to electronic music and, of course, reggae and dub.
The plugin offers three spring models, ranging from spacey, vintage echoes to a dub-focused tank inspired by the sounds of King Tubby and Lee “Scratch” Perry.

One thing SSL has done exceptionally well here is adding a bit more flexibility to the spring reverb concept without losing its character. Traditional spring units can easily get harsh or overwhelming in the mids and highs, but SpringVerb includes damping controls and intelligent ducking to keep the effect under control.
I’m a big fan of ducking on reverbs in general, as it lets you go bigger without the reverb trampling all over the dry signal.
You also get deeper control than hardware could ever offer, including spring tension, adjustable spring count, tempo-synced decay and pre-delay, stereo width (including mono operation for a more authentic feel), drive, freeze, and even a “Boing” function for those classic dub-style moments.
So overall, the plugin is flexible enough for subtle enhancement (which is my go-to use for spring reverbs nowadays) and wild enough for full-on dub plate madness.
The current deal is pretty good, too. SpringVerb is discounted to $29 (down from $49) until December 21/22, depending on the store.
If you grab it from Plugin Boutique, you can also choose a free gift with purchase, including Moog’s Moogerfooger MF-103S 12-Stage Phaser, iZotope VEA, AudioThing Things – Fold, or a 1-month Loopcloud Artist plan.
SSL SpringVerb is available for macOS 13 and later and Windows 10 or 11 in AU, VST2, VST3, and AAX formats. A free iLok account is required for authorization.
BPB is supported through affiliate links, which may earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.
