Canvas Audio is currently offering a sitewide sale on plugins and sample packs. Amid all discounts, you can also pick up their new Honeycomb Bass OD free of charge.
The list price is $49, so if you want to buzz up your low end without lowering your net worth, this is the time. You can find out more about the plugin here:
Honeycomb Bass OD is, not surprisingly, an overdrive plugin designed for bass. Feed it DI tracks or slap it on a boring synth patch to get things moving – this thing can do both subtle warming and broken, aggressive drive.
Readers with a keen eye will quickly catch the similarity between the Honeycomb Bass OD and a certain legendary hardware pedal.
As you might expect from a classic pedal, the layout is simple, but the possibilities for sound shaping are many.
- Drive pushes your signal into overdrive.
- Blend is a mix control if you need to preserve a clear low-end, but want to create some additional fullness and grit
- EQ is comprised of low, high, mid, and presence. Low and high are shelf filters to increase fatness or tighten annoying boom, as well as adding additional sparkle up top. The mid and presence knobs are bell filters tuned at specific frequencies to create punch and clarity or scoop out mud and harshness.
- Cab Sim is engaged by switching a toggle on the left side of the plugin. This activates an EQ curve that mimics speaker cabinet simulation.
- Compressor is a one-knob control for basic dynamic control. Every bassist has felt the frustration of uncontrolled dynamics in the low-end. Specific frequencies resonate and poke out like a sore thumb while other frequencies sound anemic and weak in comparison. Here’s a quick fix.
Honeycomb Bass OD also comes with a preset manager, an input, and an output control. Combined with the drive function, input and output let you set the overall gain staging.

If you feel like the plugin reacts too brutally, try dialing back the input while compensating with the output to keep your mixing levels consistent.
Finally, Honeycomb Bass OD boasts a 4x oversampling function that reduces potential aliasing problems that could arise from high drive settings. Toggle on and off to see if you like the effect on the frequency response and sound character.
All in all, Honeycomb Bass OD seems like a nice and effective tool to sculpt your bass without too much hassle.
The simple layout prioritizes using your ears and just turning the knobs until it feels right. Old bass veterans (those who accept the concept of digital distortion, that is) might appreciate a sense of nostalgia as well.
The plugin is free for a limited time. As I didn’t manage to figure out when the offer expires, it’s better to act quickly! You need to sign up with your email and register an account to access the plugin, and it is available for both macOS and Windows.
