Edu Prado Sounds has made their Hapi Drum available for free download as a Christmas gift, and you can run the virtual instrument on the free Kontakt Player.
Native Instruments’ free Kontakt Player is a sampler for macOS and Windows, available in VST3, AU, and AAX formats.
The Hapi Drum (also known as a steel tongue drum) plugin has two types of mallets, a sequencer, and loops.
To get your free copy of Hapi Drum, hit ‘Add to Cart’ on the product page, then ‘Check Out’ on the next page, then enter an email address and shipping information (not sure why they’d need the latter).
After hitting submit, Edu Prado Sounds will immediately email you a serial number for Hapi Drum.
You can then follow the instructions in the email on how to activate and install the virtual instrument in Kontakt Player via NI’s free Native Access app.
Hapi Drum comes in at 361 MB, although Edu Prado Sounds didn’t specify if that’s the download or installed size.
Hapi Drum was created by sampling takes with both cork and rubber mallets, giving the instrument two tonal options.
Edu Prado Sounds launched the instrument with 11 presets, 10 preset loops, 2 user slots, and an arpeggiator with multiple modes.
There are also tonal shaping options, provided through 12 controls across the following modules: Space, Smear, Envelope, Sheen/Snap, and HP/LP.
Aside from describing Hapi Drum as a Christmas gift, Edu Prado Sounds has not made clear how long the free download of Hapi Drum will be available for.
The company is currently running a 40% off Christmas sale on seven products, which ends at 10pm UTC on December 27, 2025.
I’m not sure if the end time of the sale gives any indication of how long Hapi Drum will be free, but if they’re ending at the same time, you might want to get in quick on the Hapi Drum download.
Edu Prado Sounds hosts four tracks on SoundCloud that showcase Hapi Drum’s sound on the product page. There are also user demos of the plugin available on YouTube.
The sound of Hapi Drum is mellow, ambient, and meditative.
To my ears, the virtual instrument would be right at home for soundtrack work, ambient music, spiritual music, lo-fi, and also as an option to add a unique texture in other types of music.
