Brian McKnight‘s son, Niko McKnight, passed away following a two-year battle with cancer. He was 32 years old.
Niko’s uncle, Claude McKnight, shared the tragic news in a heartfelt TikTok video posted on May 29. In the video, Claude described Niko as “ridiculously talented,” highlighting his skills as a singer, guitarist, and photographer. He remembered Niko as a “quirky” and “curious” individual who was always a person to be around. Claude also urged viewers to respond with love and avoid focusing on the family’s past conflicts.
“I’m devastated at my nephews’ passing. If you comment please do do in love, and NOT at what you may have heard about the relationship my brother had/has with his kids. Thank you,” Claude captioned the video.
In addition, Niko’s mother Julie McKnight shared a statement on Instagram confirming her son’s untimely death.

“It is with profound sadness that Julie McKnight and family announce the passing of her beloved son Cole Nikolas McKnight, affectionately known as “Niko.” on Thursday, May 29, 2025,” reads the message. “Nikolas was a cherished husband, son, brother, grandson, uncle, and nephew whose warmth, laughter, and love touched the lives of all who knew him. Nikolas was a self taught artist of music and photography. His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family and all those who held him dear.”
Niko publicly announced his cancer diagnosis in January 2024, expressing hope and gratitude for the support he received, particularly from his wife. Despite showing signs of improvement in December 2024, he unfortunately lost the tough battle.
Niko’s relationship with his father had been strained for years. The elder McKnight had previously referred to his older children, including Niko, as a “product of sin” and “pure evil,” and had legally changed his name to match his youngest son with his current wife, Leilani Mendoza.
Brian claimed that his ex-wife and Niko’s mother, Julie McKnight, prevented him from helping Niko during his illness, a claim she has since denied. Niko had previously performed with his father in their group MCKNIGHT. McKnight has yet to respond to his son’s death as of press time.
