Control Overview
The Avalon’s controls are split into three distinct sections. First is the preamp. It features a tube-driven feedback-style design, which delivers clean textures as well as warm saturation. Additionally, this section has switching for an input pad of 20dB, phase switching capabilities, a variable high pass filter, and high gain mode for extra input level.
Second is the compressor, with the standard options for threshold, compression or ratio, attack, and release. It also features options for signal flow, metering, and sidechain link.
Finally is the EQ, with four total bands including two parametric midrange bands for further tailoring the overall frequency response of any given source.
Smooth Compression
The optical-style compressor of the Avalon is especially notable for its transparent sound thanks to its gentle attack and release. Hear how Peterson dials it in for a rap vocal, achieving as much as seven dB of gain reduction without altering the tone of the performance.
If more apparent and aggressive dynamic control is what you’re after, the Avalon is capable of that as well. With the “/4” control, simply shift the attack time to grab on to the vocal harder.
Versatile EQ
The Avalon’s unique combination of active and passive equalization bands allow for both tonal and surgical adjustments.
The low and high bands are passive, featuring broad natural curves. This allows them to make musical boosts and cuts, especially the high band which is perfect for adding sheen and brightness to a source without becoming harsh.
The mid bands are active, and feature many unique features that can tailor your sound with extreme precision while still capable of more subtle adjustments. With switchable HI-Q for surgical adjustments, and the ability to greatly expand the frequency range of these two bands, they quickly become invaluable tonal controls.
Internal Sidechain
With the ability to use both mid bands as sidechain EQ, the Avalon can easily be used to create frequency dependent compression effects like de-essing.
Starting with the sidechain disabled, use the mid bands to locate harsh sibilant frequencies in a vocal or other source. The sidechain ensures the compressor only reacts to those harsh frequencies, so long as the threshold is set to trigger the compressor.
Peterson uses this technique in combination with the Teletronix LA-2A Tube Compressor plug-in to achieve total dynamic control over the lead vocal.
