Orra Audio has released Orra Pump, a free (pay-what-you-can) tempo-synced modulation filter for macOS and Windows. David from Orra Audio reached out to let me know about the new release, and I was very happy to see another freebie from their team. We covered Orra Audio’s Tone Zone in April, and that one got a great response from BPB readers. Orra Pump is pretty cool if you like modulated filters. It lets you draw a modulation shape, lock it to the beat if you want, and send it to a filter, volume, or pan target. Instead of choosing from a…

Thomann has taken legal action against Fender, adding another chapter to the Stratocaster copyright story. Until now, this has mostly looked like Fender sending cease-and-desist letters and smaller guitar makers trying to figure out how much legal firepower they could afford. Now Thomann, one of the biggest names in music retail, is stepping in, and it is doing so with its own Harley Benton brand directly affected. I’m not saying Fender has no right to protect its work. If someone is selling a near-identical Stratocaster copy for pocket money on AliExpress, I understand why Fender would go after it. But…

At what point did you realize the track needed movement inside the sounds rather than more layers to build intensity? Once we added the drums, the song shifted drastically. What originally felt like a slow, reflective ballad suddenly had a sense of immediateness and forward momentum. The breakbeat style drums changed how everything else needed to function in the track. At that point, it became clear that the synth elements couldn’t just be textural or static, they needed to move and drive forward with the same intensity as the rhythm. My first instinct was to start adding more layers to…

OTODESK has released ANATOMY, a free and open-source VST3 plugin for Windows. This is the third free plugin from OTODESK we’ve covered on BPB in June, following Ambience and Quad Morph Filter. Both received some very cool comments from the BPB community, although I especially liked Quad Morph Filter. ANATOMY is different from any transient shaper I’ve tested before. The interface feels a bit raw and unfinished to me, but the plugin itself is interesting if you like putting transients under control and turning short sounds into new material. The important thing to know is that ANATOMY is not meant…

United Plugins has released TrapTune Core, a free automatic vocal tuning plugin by Soundevice Digital. TrapTune Core is part of the UnitedFree Bundle, which means you can run it for free through the UnitedPlugins Manager. You create a free account, go to the downloads section, install the manager, and you get access to the free bundled plugins. The catch is that TrapTune Core is ad-supported. United Plugins says no plugin functionality is limited, but there is a small promotional ad banner at the bottom of the interface. These are ads for the developer’s own plugins rather than random third-party ads,…

Huge thanks to BPB readers Piti Acho and Javier Emanuel for sharing this one in the BPB Community. The offer expires soon, so I’m keeping this short and getting it out as fast as possible. The Space Between the Notes “Music is the space between the notes.”— Claude Debussy Most beginner songwriters focus on the notes. The professionals focus on the relationships between the notes. Two of the most powerful tools in songwriting are: Intervals Chord Inversions These concepts are hiding inside almost every great melody and chord progression you’ve ever heard. The good news? They’re much simpler than they sound.   Quick Summary 👉 Intervals describe the distance between two notes. Chord inversions change which note is in the bass of a chord. Together, they help songwriters create emotion, movement, tension, and smooth…

Bunkervik Spatial Reverb is a free spatial reverb plugin for macOS and Windows, created in collaboration between The NEMUS Project, Missing Ear, and Physical Audio. We’ve seen plenty of plugins that offer the spatial character of interesting places, and you can check some out in our best FREE convolution reverb article. Our list isn’t just about reverbs that simulate real-life spaces; some plugins emulate iconic gear, and one of my favourites is Wave Alchemy’s Magic7 (a Bricasti M7 emulation). Besides the sound, one appeal of a reverb that simulates a real acoustic space is that it takes us to a…
