Your Kick Is Loud. But You Still Can’t Hear It. You turn it up. Still buried. You add more bass. Now the mix gets muddy. You add more compression. Now it sounds smaller. The problem is often not the kick itself. It is everything fighting for the same space around it. A kick needs: Low end for weight. And… Midrange attack for clarity. Then everything else needs to get out of the way. How to Gain Stage Properly in a DAW (And How to Break the Rules) 🎚️ Quick Summary If your kick is getting lost: 👉 Remove unnecessary…
If you want a loud track, you have to control the peaks of your individual sounds first, especially the sharp transients on kicks, snares and hats. Reaching for a fast compressor is the common mistake. Here is what actually works. Why a Fast Compressor Isn’t Enough A very fast compressor still cannot catch the fastest transients. Bounce a snare with a 0.5 ms attack compressor and the initial spike is still there, hitting your limiter first. Key settings: Even a 0.5 to 1 ms attack is often not fast enough for the sharpest transients You end up with a transient…
CarbonDSP has launched its first four audio plugins, including two freebies for Windows users. The free pair is Vellum, a vocal-focused reverb, and Biased, a component-modeled tube preamp. The other two launch products are paid dynamics processors. Black Ion 76 is a FET limiter inspired by the classic 1176-style circuit, while Carbon CL-610 is based on the Spectra Sonics 610 compressor/limiter. Both are available with introductory pricing until August 31st, but the main attraction here, of course, is that Vellum and Biased are free. CarbonDSP claims that its plugins are built with component-level DSP and verified with pluginval strictness 10…
Sweet Audio has recently released Scintillate, a free spectral reverb plugin for macOS and Windows. Scintillate is also the winner of the KVR Developer Challenge 2026, which is a pretty strong recommendation on its own. We covered the KVR Developer Challenge 26 when it launched, and James also looked at some of the free synths and free FX plugins from this year’s lineup. In short, Scintillate is a “spectral reverb sparkle engine.” It generates small spectral sparkles inside the sound of a more conventional reverb, so the result is not simply another room or plate algorithm. If you use it…
Pro2Max has released Unirock HumStrat, a free HSS electric guitar virtual instrument for Windows. HumStrat is available as a VST3 plugin and a standalone application. The important detail is that this is not a lite edition or teaser version of a larger instrument. The complete instrument is free, with no paid upgrade or feature-restricted tier above it. The library is around 1.7 GB and includes samples across every fret, with five pickup positions, round-robin variations, multiple velocity layers, and several performance articulations. Pretty cool for a guitar freebie. The five pickup positions cover bridge humbucker, bridge plus middle, middle, middle…
OpenTune is a free, open-source pitch-correction tool for Windows and macOS. The project is still in beta, but it’s worth checking out if you are looking for a free Melodyne or Auto-Tune-style alternative with an AI-based approach. The biggest blocker for potential users like me, though, is that the interface is in Chinese. Part of my work here at BPB is often testing an obscure-looking plugin so you do not have to. I did my best with this one, but I currently do not have access to a Windows machine, so I tested the macOS version on my main laptop.…
Foundations Music Academy offers private music lessons and group classes for students of all ages at four Central Ohio locations: Powell, Lewis Center, Hilliard, and Dublin. We have covered online learning tools before, and apps can be useful for a convenient way to start learning piano or music theory at home. But there is still a difference between following software lessons and working with a teacher who can notice posture, technique, tone, timing, and confidence in the room. That is the gap Foundations Music Academy is built around. The school offers one-on-one lessons in piano, guitar, voice, violin, drums, cello,…
Audio Assault is offering Carntens Greys, a premium guitar amp module for Amp Locker, as a free download for a limited time. Please note that this is not a standalone amp plugin. Carntens Greys requires Amp Locker, Audio Assault’s amp-sim platform, which lets you load the company’s guitar amp models, cabinets, pedals, and rack effects. That said, Amp Locker is also free; it’s just an extra piece of kit you need to install to run Carntens Greys. The process should be familiar if you have grabbed previous Audio Assault giveaways. You basically add Carntens Greys to your cart while it…
Alonso Sound is offering the 19 Year Anniversary Pack as a free download until August 31st, 2026. This pack normally costs $35 and includes 128 presets for u-he Diva, Xfer Serum 2, Reveal Sound Spire, and LennarDigital Sylenth1. It includes 32 presets for each synth and covers leads, basses, plucks, pads, acid sounds, sequences, arps, keys, and synth patches for electronic dance music. By the way, we covered Alonso Sound’s huge Revealed Free Tryout Archive last year. That pack bundled over 3.5 GB of free sounds from Alonso’s commercial sound design releases. This anniversary pack is much smaller, but the…
Groove is what gets people moving. This build takes a beat from a flat starting loop to one with real personality in four levels. Most of the magic is small timing, length and layering decisions, not new ideas. Level 1: The Basic Groove The starting point, kept simple. It works, but it is flat: no detail, no movement, no personality yet. Key settings: A kick on every downbeat, a closed hi-hat, and a clap or snare on beats 2 and 4 A bass on a basic offbeat rhythm Level 2: Improve the Bounce Same elements, better rhythm. The bass and…
