Developer Renger Koning has released Felt & Fog cinematic piano for Kontakt, along with a free version. We’re almost spoiled for choice when it comes to free cinematic piano libraries; we have things like Dark Mode by SRM Sounds, Cozy Piano from SampleScience, and Venus Theory’s forms:piano. They all offer something a little different, so there’s always room for one more (or more). This time, we’ve got Renger Koning’s Felt & Fog library for Kontakt. Felt & Fog isn’t a brand-new library; it’s been available on Decent Sampler for a while. But, given the success of the Decent Sampler version…
Cotorro Audio has released P1E-RU, a free multiband harmonic exciter plugin for Windows. P1E-RU splits your signal into three fixed frequency bands (low from 20 Hz to 350 Hz, mid from 350 Hz to 2.5 kHz, and high from 2.5 kHz to 22 kHz) and lets you apply saturation to each one independently. I don’t like that you can’t adjust the crossover points, but the Linkwitz-Riley crossover architecture keeps everything phase-aligned, which is nice for a free plugin. There are three saturation models to choose from. Analog gives you classic tape-style harmonics, Vintage leans toward tube-like even harmonics, and Digital…
Cure Audio has released Scream, a free and open-source plugin that recreates the Scream filter from Native Instruments’ Massive synthesizer as a standalone effect you can use in any DAW. I’m used to seeing plugins that emulate hardware, but here’s a plugin that emulates software. The Scream filter was one of Massive’s iconic modules, known for its aggressive tone and modulation features that defined the dubstep era of electronic music production. Massive may not be as popular today as it was at its peak (Vital, Serum, and other modern synths have taken over much of that territory), but it remains…

Artists in DSP have updated the free Amorph text-to-DSP plugin, which now lets you create custom user interfaces. If you missed Amorph on its initial release, here’s a quick recap. Amorph is a text-to-DSP plugin that allows you to create any instrument or effect you can imagine from simple, plain language prompts. Potentially, Amorph is every plugin you’ll ever need inside a single plugin, and you don’t need any coding knowledge to use it. When you submit a simple prompt, like “Make an overdrive effect similar to the Ibanez Tube Screamer TS808”, Amorph will create an AI prompt that you…
Developer Mr Jefferson has released Stepista, a free AI-assisted MIDI pattern generator. Chord and Pattern generators have been around for a long time, and while the simplicity of 1980s hardware MIDI sequencers is still desirable to many, software offerings have come a long way. Although we have long seen new MIDI-generation plugins come along fairly often, such as Granvia’s Fantamidi (a free version is available), we see more than ever now due to the use of AI in music production. Whether it’s bassline, melody, chord progression, or pattern generation, AI-powered tools are constantly expanding the possibilities. Despite the potential of…
Fuse Audio Labs has released Tube Lab, a vintage channel strip plugin built around a multi-tube preamp, a Baxandall-style EQ, and an optical compressor with flexible module routing. If you’re familiar with Fuse Audio Labs (we covered the excellent free VPRE-72 Vintage Tube Preamp and VREV-666 Spring Reverb plugins in the past), you know the developer has serious analog modeling credentials. Reimund Dratwa, the company’s founder, has designed modeling plugins for brands like ACME, Black Rooster, elysia, Millennia, Neold, and Vertigo, among others. And it makes sense that this experience shows in Tube Lab. The preamp section offers five classic tube…

Sojus Records has released a free and open-source VST3 emulation of the Ensoniq SD-1/32 synthesizer. It’s the first plugin emulation of this synth. But the coolest part for me is that it’s built on MAME, the same emulation framework used to preserve arcade machines and vintage hardware. I’ve spent hours playing some of my favorite arcade machine games on MAME (Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, anyone?), and knowing that it’s now running a synth plugin in my DAW is wild. The synth it’s running is also pretty cool. The Ensoniq SD-1, released in 1990, sits in a long line of Ensoniq’s Transwave…
Plugin Boutique’s VirtualCZ synth is currently 75% off, bringing the price down from $79 to $19. The sale runs until April 30th. On top of that, Plugin Boutique is running a new tiered free gift promotion this month, and I’ll cover the freebies you can pick up with your purchase below. VirtualCZ is a phase distortion synth inspired by Casio’s CZ series from the 1980s. I’m a huge sucker for retro synths, especially Casios. The CZ synths were everywhere in the late 80s and early 90s, showing up on countless techno, house, rave, and synth-pop records. Now, phase distortion itself…
