Moloko Instruments has released Luch, a free sample-based instrument for macOS and Windows. I absolutely love the organic sound here. Especially lately, when we are being bombarded with AI and vibe-coded tools that often feel anything but organic or human-made, something like Luch feels like a much-needed breath of fresh air. Luch is based on a rare Soviet-era children’s metallophone found at a flea market. Moloko Instruments recorded it through vintage Oktava microphones and hardware from the same era, aiming for a sound that feels imperfect (and I love it for that). This is the sort of instrument that can…
Unusable Engineering has released Binaural Modulator, a free spatial modulation effect for macOS and Windows. Binaural Modulator is basically an auto-pan plugin on steroids. The thing that makes it pretty cool is that it is built around a small room model, with a fixed listening point in the middle and one or two moving sound-source nodes orbiting around it. That whole setup gives it a more physical control model than a standard left-right panner. You move the source around the room, and the plugin translates that movement into stereo position, delay, Doppler pitch movement, and some psychoacoustic filtering. It’s really…
CapybaraSoftware has made CapySynth permanently free after the response to last week’s BPB coverage. We first covered CapySynth last Saturday when it was free for 24 hours. The developer later emailed to say the support from BPB readers was overwhelmingly positive, with over 5,000 downloads, and that it changed his mind about the pricing. So, good news if you missed the short promo. CapySynth is now free forever, with no account needed and no subscription. Here’s the developer’s message: A few days ago, you featured my synthesizer CapySynth after I made it free for 24 hours, expecting maybe a few…
More Than One Waveform Imagine you had a synthesizer with only one waveform. A saw wave. You could shape it with filters and envelopes. That’s how many classic analog synthesizers work. Now imagine instead of one waveform… You had hundreds. And instead of choosing one… You could smoothly move through them while playing. That’s wavetable synthesis. It’s one of the most expressive and visually intuitive forms of synthesis available today. Quick Summary 👉 Wavetable synthesis creates sound by scanning through a collection of digital waveforms called a wavetable. Instead of using a single oscillator shape, the waveform can change…
YMCK has released Magical FDS Plug, a free software synthesizer that emulates the sound of the FDS sound chip. This is an absolute blast from the past for me, because YMCK’s Magical 8bit Plug was one of the first plugins I ever installed. I was deep into chiptune music back then, and I was using it in MuLab, the first DAW I ever used. And wow, writing that now makes me feel so old. It was the early days of VST plugins for me, and it is a little surreal to see something new from the developer of Magical 8bit…
BPB reader Wiseman has released WiseTracker, a free public beta tracker that runs as both a Windows standalone app and a VST3 instrument plugin called WiseTrax. This one has an interesting backstory. Wiseman is not a developer in the traditional sense, but he has used trackers for decades and wanted something that felt like FastTracker 2 inside a modern DAW. So he used Claude to build it. Yes, this is a vibe-coded plugin on a vibe-coded website. I covered YMCK’s Magical FDS Plug earlier today, another new music tool made with AI assistance, and I guess this is the new…
Developer DAWJunkie has released Drumbo Jr, a free drum machine for macOS and Windows. Drumbo is something of a departure from the norm, as we typically see synth tributes (like the DT-600 Mini) and quirky FX plugins (like Knobs) from DAWJunkie. This time, we’ve got Drumbo Jr, the developer’s first drum machine, and it’s free for a limited time. Although Drumbo Jr is a first for DAWJunkie, most elements of the product and process are very familiar. Drumbo Jr is available in AU, VST3, and AAX formats for macOS and Windows, and it’s free for a limited, but undefined, time.…
Fine Classics Plugins is offering Fine Classics Saturator as a free download again for a limited time. We featured Fine Classics Saturator on BPB last year when it was also available for free, so this is a nice second chance for anyone who missed it. To claim the plugin this time, enter your name and email address on the product page, and Fine Classics will send the download to your inbox. The developer notes that by signing up, you agree to receive marketing emails, although you can unsubscribe later. Also, check the Promotions tab if you use Gmail or a…
Plugin Boutique is offering 87% off Solid State Logic’s SSL Native Channel Strip 2, bringing the price down from $149 to just $19. The important part is that the offer ends today, June 26th. If you have been waiting for a low price on a proper SSL channel strip plugin, this is the perfect opportunity to get it. SSL Native Channel Strip 2 is based on the processing blocks of SSL’s analog consoles, with the workflow and tone of the SSL 9000K channel strip. It gives you EQ, filters, compression, and gate/expander processing in a single plugin, and for me,…
Sketch Audio has released Series 9000, a free low-pass filter and distortion plugin for macOS, Windows, and iOS. Series 9000 features a sixth-order low-pass filter based on a late-1980s rackmount sampler. The developer does not name the original unit, but I’m pretty sure that it emulates the Akai S900/S950 family. That is definitely a fun source to borrow from because those samplers were anything but clean. The 12-bit grit gets a lot of attention, of course, but the steep low-pass filter is a big part of why the S900 sounded so interesting. Series 9000 focuses on that filtering behavior and…
