Developer DAWJunkie has released Padness 2 Jr, a free lush pad synth for macOS and Windows. We checked out DAWJunkie’s Padness Jr in September 2025, and by all accounts, it’s a simple freebie that packs a bigger punch than expected, which is the DAWJunkie way. Now, the developer is back with a bigger and better sequel, Padness 2 Jr. Padness 2 Jr features two synths: Synth 1 with standard waveforms, and Synth 2, a newly-added wavetable synth. In addition to the two synths, you have three samples you can layer with the synths to alter the character, particularly the initial…
Every “must-have” plugin list tells you to buy FabFilter Pro-Q. And yes, it’s one of the best EQs ever made. But here’s the thing: most producers don’t actually need it. Two free plugins now cover what used to require an expensive purchase. I’ve been testing them on real projects, and I realized that the gap between “free” and “paid” has never been smaller. TDR Nova and ZL Equalizer 2 together handle static EQ, dynamic EQ, de-essing, resonance control, M/S processing, and even EQ matching. If you’re not working in surround or running 50+ instances with cross-plugin analysis, these two are…
Sonible has released puffer:fish, a free saturation plugin for macOS and Windows that wraps harmonic distortion in a colorful, character-driven interface. We’ve seen plenty of one-knob saturation tools over the years, including the super popular Softube Saturation Knob, among countless other freebies. puffer:fish follows the same concept but approaches it from a different angle, at least in terms of interface design. Instead of presenting saturation in technical terms, it makes the saturation more playful and visual. So, unless it’s already clear from the screenshot, each saturation mode is represented by a different cartoon fish. But how on earth (or sea)…
Minimal Audio has released Poly Flanger, a musically intelligent flanger plugin for macOS and Windows. Priced at an introductory $29 (regularly $49), Poly Flanger expands the traditional flanger concept into more musical territory. Instead of relying solely on sweeping comb-filter movement, it aligns its resonances to musical pitches, so the effect can follow your track’s key and scale. Poly Flanger is a polyphonic comb filter with up to eight independent voices. Each voice can be tuned and quantized to a chosen scale, meaning the resonant peaks generated by the flanger sit in key rather than drifting unpredictably. To be honest,…
Sand is the latest release from Hvoya Audio, a sound design tool for macOS and Windows that compands the derivative of the original signal. It expands the quietest signals and adds some soft limiting to the loud signals, adding grit and texture. Working on the derivative rather than the original signal yields some interesting side effects. In addition to creating that overdriven, gritty texture, the compander acts like something of a high-pass filter, pulling out elements of your sound that you might not otherwise hear, with a maximum amplification of around 140 dB. The resizable GUI is pretty straightforward. The…
Dumumub offers Orbit Granular Synth and other freebies for macOS, Windows, and Linux. Dumumub has released three plugins, including Orbit Granular Synth, and you can download them for free from the developer’s website now. The free plugins are: Orbit – a gravity-based granular synth, available in AU, VST3, CLAP, and standalone formats for macOS, Windows, and Linux Dumumub – 0000003 – a drawable wavetable synth, available in AU and VST3 formats for macOS Dumumub – 0000004 – a frequency manipulation tool, available in AU and VST3 formats for macOS I had a few issues with these plugins, and unfortunately, Orbit…
ZigZagzAudio has released Sound Soup, a creative multi-FX plugin for macOS, and BPB readers can get 50% off with the exclusive coupon code BPB50 until February 24th. Sound Soup is priced at $49.99, but with the BPB50 code, you can grab it at half price until February 24. If you like experimenting with effects in unconventional ways (and especially if you’re a sucker for pixel art like me), this one is worth a closer look. Of course, the first thing I noticed when checking out Sound Soup was the charmingly retro-inspired pixel art interface. It’s done so well that it…
This Change Feels Different I’ve been here before. In 1999, when Napster hit the music world, everything changed overnight. File sharing. Industry panic. Artists scrambling. (Shoutout to the prophet Lars Ulrich.) That moment felt like something being taken away. What’s happening now with AI? It feels like something being added. And that difference matters. Quick Summary 👉 AI isn’t replacing music producers — it’s becoming the most powerful creative partner they’ve ever had. The future of music production belongs to collaboration between human taste and AI capability. Suno Changed My Perspective Have you played around with Suno yet? Because…
Temecula DSP has released the SST-206, a digital recreation of the legendary Space Station reverb, available for macOS and Windows. Before we dive into the details, we’ve got something special for BPB readers. We’re giving away two free copies of the SST-206 plugin. To enter, simply subscribe to our newsletter. Two lucky winners will be selected and contacted on February 25th. Now, let’s take a closer look at what the SST-206 brings to your DAW. SST-206 recreates the sound and architecture of the original 1978 Space Station (SST-282) and the later SST-206 hardware revision from the early 2000s. Instead of…
Pythagoras was an ancient Greek philosopher in Ionia, modern-day Turkey. He spent 22 years in Egypt and 12 years in Babylon, modern-day Iraq, and his 34 years spent abroad in his early adulthood were the time in which he learned geography and music. No Pythagorean writings survived antiquity, if there ever were any, as he was primarily an oral teacher, so everything we know about him today comes to us via different writers with first- and second-hand accounts. Writers of the Middle Ages and Renaissance credited Pythagoras with having “discovered” or at least first characterized perfect intervals. As the story…
