Audiolatry has released LoQuest, a free virtual instrument plugin designed for lo-fi, ambient, and retro music styles.
LoQuest is a sample-based virtual instrument with 22 lo-fi presets. You get keys, organs, warm pads, plucks, and ambient strings. Each patch is ready to use out of the box and aims to deliver that cozy vintage feel for chilled-out beats and lo-fi music.
The plugin was developed using Maize Sampler, so it comes with the standard Maize feature set. If you’ve used Maize Sampler plugins before, you’ll be familiar with the layout and functionality on display here.
The feature list includes an ADSR envelope shaping, pitch modulation, and built-in effects such as delay, chorus, distortion, and reverb. The effects are simple, but you can adjust the individual mix controls and a small set of parameters for each effect.
There’s also a basic filter section, a poly/mono voice switch, velocity sensitivity, and glide functionality. These controls allow for a bit of tone-shaping and performance tweaking, but ultimately, LoQuest keeps things simple.
Since it’s sample-based, each preset in LoQuest is built around a distinct set of samples, rather than real-time synthesis. That gives the instrument its lo-fi character but also sets some limits on how much you can customize the sounds.
You won’t find deep modulation options or layering capabilities here. There are only 22 curated patches that do their job of sounding lo-fi fairly well, and that’s it.
I played this during a quick jam session today, and LoQuest is a solid little plugin for laying down quick lo-fi textures. It’s fun to use, and the presets sound decent. But it’s also quite limited.
Personally, I prefer yaubf synths with a more flexible engine and a larger preset library, especially when it comes to lo-fi production. Yesterday, I mentioned liking compact plugins focused on a single instrument (like a kalimba), but LoQuest doesn’t quite fit that mold.
Still, I can see some producers enjoying it for quick inspiration or layering. If you’re looking for a lightweight lo-fi plugin with a handful of usable sounds, LoQuest is worth a try.
LoQuest is available as a free download and supports VST3 plugin format on Windows and both VST3 and AU formats on macOS. All included sounds are 100% royalty-free.
