Analog Obsession has released TheBus, a free analog-style compressor plugin for macOS and Windows.
Coming from one of my favorite indie developers, I was super excited to test this one. Analog Obsession describes TheBus as a fully custom compressor rather than a clone or variation of a specific hardware unit.
My first impressions are good. It has a soft character, a soft knee, and a linear frequency response, with a design that works well for drums, percussion, and a mix bus that needs a bit of glue.
I tested TheBus on a drum bus and on the master bus, and it was very easy to use. It sounds good and gets you useful results quickly, which is exactly what I want from a bus compressor when in a hurry.
What I love most is the simplified Attack and Release section. Each control has only three settings, with Attack offering 0.1 ms, 10 ms, and 30 ms, while Release offers 50 ms, 400 ms, and 800 ms.
That kind of limitation is great for me because it removes some of the second-guessing from your timing choices. Instead of obsessing over milliseconds, you can pick fast, medium, or slow, then focus on listening to the result.
The rest of the control set is straightforward. Threshold sets the compression amount, and you can combine it with the Input control for smooth leveling or heavier saturated compression. There is also a sidechain high-pass filter up to 500 Hz, external sidechain support, a clean Output control, and a Mix knob for parallel compression.
TheBus doesn’t use oversampling, but Analog Obsession says it includes embedded lightweight anti-aliasing. The interface is resizable from 50% to 200% using the handle in the bottom-right corner.
I like the interface overall, especially the simple colors and clean general look. It does feel a bit more cluttered than usual for Analog Obsession, though.
Some labels sit very close to the knobs below them, which makes the layout feel busier than the more polished designs I’m used to seeing from AO. Still, it is more than good enough for convenient use.
TheBus is definitely worth a look if you want an easy compressor for buses without too many choices getting in the way. Also, Analog Obsession remains one of the most active freeware developers around, and you can optionally donate on Patreon to support the work.

TheBus is available in VST3, AU, and AAX Native/Audiosuite formats for macOS 10.11 or higher, with Intel and Apple Silicon support. The Windows version is available in VST3 and AAX Native/Audiosuite formats for Windows 10 and 11.
