Singer-songwriter Amerie believes that plants have consciousness and that humans were “genetically engineered.”
On a Patreon-exclusive episode of The Joe Budden Podcast, the 45-year-old singer-songwriter shared some of her spiritual beliefs and left the hosts stunned. “I believe that that we’re genetically engineered, like, human beings are genetically engineered,” she said, as seen in the clip below. She was asked by whom, and replied, “the Anunnaki,” referring to the ancient deities of Mesopotamian mythology.
“Yo, are you sure you don’t get high?” one of the hosts joked after she said she read the bible and saw “the flaming swords of Eden as lasers” and Noah’s Ark as “a submarine.” She insisted that she doesn’t do drugs, but if she did she would want to “see, like, freaking cartoons.”

“I did an experiment where I was talking to the trees,” she continued, asking Melyssa Ford if she’s ever talked to trees too. “I saw on TikTok, and I was like, that makes sense because plants can hear you. … I felt like it bent towards me, because plants can hear you.” Ford said that she previously went to a national park and was hugging trees and felt a different energy.
When she’s not talking to foliage, Amerie is a published author. She is set to her release her second novel, This Is Not a Ghost Story, in June. It tells the story of a Black man who comes back from the dead and becomes an instant celebrity for being the first, verifiable ghost.
